When I got my 6811 back, there was some minor handling scratches on it, almost like they had it upside down on a workbench. Just curious if this is how they treat all laptops.
Yeah I do take good care of my laptop. I have never spent this much money on anything except cars and I am very proud of my new laptop. I want it to last for a very long time. I will definately check it very thouroughly when I get it back. Thanks for the warning.

So then he told me I have to contact BB and ask them the order number I'm gonna call BB when they open to see if I can still purchase the extended warranty.

No my screen is not loose, it doesnt move.

EDIT: Has anyone noticed that as of this morning the 7422GX is no longer on Bestbuys website?
***Just went to the BB site...man, can't believe they took it off the site. I just purchased a 7422GX like last week. So far I really love it, but it is a bit slow (4200rpm drive???) for an AMD 64 and 1GB Ram. Am really thinking about putting a good 80 or 100GB 7200rpm drive in it sometime to see if it makes any difference. I wonder what Gateway...and BB will replace the 7422GX with. Did they take it off the market because of the hinge cracks? I did buy the three year warranty for that very purpose. But so far, no cracks And I hope they don't come, but from what I am reading it almost sounds inevitable. Hmmmm, it is still a wonderful machine though.

Just as a matter of interest,
is it not possible to apply a minute drop of lubricant to
help offset the hinge cracking problem.

Just a suggestion.

Harry.

I have this laptop as well...and after reading this post, I do believe that it is going out to Ebay soon. I am not going to deal with this down the road if my hinges crack.

Does Gateway pay for the shipping to and from them? I've had mine about 3 weeks and feel sick after reading about all the hinge problems

I bought mine on 1/8/05, so far so good in regards to the hinges (knock on wood).

Mine were fine when I shipped it off.

That's weird. I've had my 6805 since december. No problems at all. And I haul it to work everyday.

I got it back

Well I just got my laptop back from RMA.

It took a while cause they didnt get me the box for so long. Once I sent it in though I got it back 4 days later. Everything seems good with it, my screen is still pixel perfect. Nothing else wrong with it that I can see other than a lite scratch on the lid, like Compman55 said. Also the little fake SD card for the media reader is gone. I'll have to call them up and complain about that. Overall I'm happy though. I just hope it doesnt crack again.

I got mine back from motherboard replacement and it wasn't scratched on the lid. Also, I haven't been able to compare for sure yet, but it looks like they cleaned my screen for me too Shipped out on a Saturday, got it back the next Friday

They packed the box very differently from what I did tho (I also got back a different box, one that originally a customer had shipped in by a DHL label from the remnants of the sticker, mine shipped in by FedEx label). I couldn't recreate their packing even if I tried. It was very confusing :scratched: It was secure nonetheless tho.

Yeah they cleaned my screen too, although very badly. It was streaked really bad. First thing I did was run pixel buddy to make sure my screen still had no dead pixels. Thank God it doesn't. I also got mine back in a different box. It was packed very wierd. Also it was sealed in tape that said "Inspected by Bestbuy" lol

Can anyone just tell me: is the hinge crack cosmetic or does it really matter functionally (when it happens or later on)? My hinges have not cracked yet, which is rather surprising--I bought my 7422 in mid-January, and while I certainly don't abuse it, I do open and close it many times a day and haul it all over the place--and the hinges are VERY stiff and creaky, so I assume it is just a matter of time until they crack. When it happens, can I ignore it and simply deal with my computer being less pretty, or is the LCD going to fall off if I ignore it?

It's just cosmetic. Mines was stiff too before it cracked. I'm living with it for now since I need the notebook now, but will send it in soon.
