Problems with Toshiba S1 notebook and Toshiba support

Hi.

I am currently overseas (In Ukraine working as a volunteer) for an extended period and I have developed problems with my Toshiba S1 Notebook. Currently the display is note working and the computer beeps (two short one long and three short). Before it died it was indicating problems with memory and the ATI graghics module. If I remove th memory moduals the laptop does not beep anymore but I still have no video output.

This laptop is less then 15 months old. I think the laptop was under a three year warranty but I can not confirm this becuse the model and serial number is not printed on the lable underneath for some reason. I have the serial number of the Motherboard and the build date (June 2003).

I understand there is a recall realted to memory modules for the S1.

I tried contacting Toshiba in my home country and (after some time waiting on hold 15 minutes and 20$ in phone bill) I was told that they would send me an email but I have still not heard back from them (So much for their service and committment to customer relations).

I am at a loss and extremly pis__off at the lack of helpful assistance provided by Toshiba support. If my laptop is out of warranty it is only out by one month - but I think it has three year world wide warranty but can not conform as my documentation is at home (and I am in Ukraine)

My laptyop is my life line and link to the world and I feel at considerable loss as a result of it not working. I can not access a Toshiba suport centre in a hurry and local technicians are unable to help without the serial number.

Personally I feel the problem is related to poor designs and quaility of the Toshiba S1 Laptops. (I thought I was buying a good wuality computer bu buying Toshiba. normally I would buy either IBM or Compaq but decided to by a Toshiba becuse a previous laptop I had was Toshiba and well I thought they were the BMW of laptops -0 there is no doubt about it Compaq provided better custromer support)

Anyway can any one assist me.

I need to find my serial number based off the serial number of my motherboard (I thought Toshibia would have a Bill of Materials register) or I need to buy a new motherboard hoping that that is my problem.

I am not planning on returning home but when I do I will consider making a complaint to the consumer affard department. Until then I need a working laptop.

PS I have tried replacing the memory moduals but still have a problem.

Download and install Belarc Advisor. It is a small utility that takes a snapshot of the interior of your laptop. One piece of the info it provides, is the Serial Number of your laptop

Thanks BUT... I an not see anything. No Graphics output

Thanks I would love to run this ukltility BUT I can not see anthing as I have no screen output.

I have been ciontacted by Toshiba but they have not been hepful other then to say that there may be a problem with my motherboard.

I am interetsed in knowing how many other people out there have experienced simmilar problems.

If any one can tell me also why my computer has no model/serial number printed on the label on the bottom of the computer?

And why is it that Toshiba can not asertain the serial number of the notebook based on the serial number of the mother board? Surely they record this information on the bill of materials if not how else would they know if teh part is related to the orginal purchase?

Not having a working notebook is a real neagative. I bought Toshiba on teh beloif that I was buying a reliable notebook backed up by world wide support.

Now I am not so sure.

It is odd that that you dont have the Toshiba sticker on the bottom. With all the heat, mine has faded but it doenst look like a sticker than can be easily removed either. Which retailer did you purchase it from? It is just odd if your purchased it new from a known retailer. Can you use an external monitor for the time being?

Oh I see the label is still there. I dont think the model number is as important as the part number which should be on the label. Call them again. I think most Tosh come with a 1 year warranty w/ the exception of Tecras.
