9300 has some serious competition from Fujitsu - Page 3

I live in Japan and about once or twice a month I stop in at SofMap (it's an all around techy store) inside the Kintetsu Department Store in front of Kyoto Station. I saw this new fine looking machine there (and played with it a bit)......while very nice with its Dual HD ability isn't your XPS2 either.

First, the price was 395,000 yen. Which roughly comes to 3700 USD (or more depending on the exchange rate). Although, prices for computer parts are far more expensive here. To buy a dekstop 6800 GT - you'll be forking over nearly 400 USD (suck my wallet dry!). Expect a price of around 3 Grand stateside - they usually drop the price heavily when it comes to the States. Also, the screen resolution on this display unit only had 1440X900 (which is dissapointing); however, compared the my iXPS2, it was beatiful nevertheless. The graphics card was indeed a Geforce Go 6800 (unfortunately, non-Ultra). Despite having two HD's the system did appear quite thin, which is nice. Other then that, I can't really say much else.

A possible replacement for your 9300 if you can get it for the right price. But, it's not exactly a iXPS2 either. I'd wait till you have some reviews and some good benchies - all I can give you is my "first blush" observation.

Note: Someone is bound to ask me if I can read japanese --- so yes, I can (to an extent). I speak fairly fluently, and read and write around your average junior HS student. But, the good thing is all the Japanese on the laptop is written in Katakana, which is still Japanese "characters", but written in a way to sound very similar to the "techy PC jargon" of English words. Just google Katakana and you'll know what I mean.

I would go this weekend to mediamarkt and confirm the specifications of the machine, and the impresions

Belch, what can you tell us about heat, fans and noise?
And how long does the batt lasts in office use, you know simply tasks.
A review or photos would be nice for all!

Are you from Spain too? I think you can also find the notebook in Carrefour.

yes you can buy it at carrefour at 1500 euros in mediamarky 1449 euros

Cas, do you know if there will be greater models? I mean I prefer a PentiumM 1.86 instead of 1.60 even if it's more expensive.
If you plan to go to MediaMark or Carrefour, could you ask it that for me and its price?
Thanks in advance!

Please, anyone who knows the price of the m4438 with 2GHz (or more) Pentium-M and WUXGA screen, tell me what it is.

I find it very hard to believe that his model would cost 3000 dollars. 1 dollar is roughly 1 euro (okay, it's less) and the M3438g costs with 1,86GHz Pentium-M and normal screen costs under 2000 euros so how can a notebook that has a little better screen and 0,14GHz more CPU-power cost almost over 1000 euros more. That's insane.

In my country of Finland the M4438 has not yet been released. I want to buy it but there's no way I'm going to pay 3000 euros for it. 2500 euros is the most I can afford.

It is WUXGA, "This one’s an eye-catcher at 17-inches worth of high-definition display (1900 x 1200 pixels, yo) powered by a no-nonsense nVidia GeForce Go 6800 graphics chip with 256MB of video RAM."

at this moment there aren´t greater models, but i suppose that in a month will be better ones this weekend i´ll go to have a loook i tell you then

to dellandre the link could be wuxga but the m3438 is not, it is 1400x900 lower processor, only one hard disk, and as i said doon´t know hard speed, and ram speed, some notebooks although they have 533mhz BUS use older ram

nice screen but I wouldn't buy it.

First about the price. I come from Sweden. Here we have a terrific system where you can buy a computer every 3-years that is tax-reductable (spelling??) if youre employed. I will pay 2600 US$, but without tax my cost is 1800US$. Heat, well where the harddrive is placed it gets a bit warm. But overall its not a big issue. Sorry to say I cant compare with anything with the same specification. Fans, its very quit. Also you have the button for silent drive. Then its almost silent. I was suprised by the low sound overall. Batterytime, it dryes out quickly with heavy operations of course. But a movie is no problem. I havent time to try the battery with Instant-on yet. But it will surely be better. I will get some pics. Stay tuned

Okay so you live in Sweden. Hi ya neighbour. Anyway if you paid 2600 dollars for it I can't imagine it's price would be way over 2500 euros in Finland (1 euroa is 1,2 dollars).

I think M4438 is a great notebook although I haven't actually used it. It has all the specs to make it somewhat futureproof and to play latest games. This notebook is my only option really as I can't (or won't) buy Dell XPS Gen2, Sager, Alienware, Gigabite or VoodooPC.

I have the Fujitsu and is better than my old 9300

Hi, I buy the new Fujitsu 4 days ago and was a suprise for me:

1.6, 80 gb5400, gforce6800 go ddr1, 1gh ram

The fisrt surprise was 3670!!! 3d mark 2005 out of the box (2990 my 2.13 2g ram dell 9300!!!)

Second surprise: the amazing wxga display, that looks a lot better than the 9300 wuxga; It's a pain that wuxga display wasn't available for the Fujitsu at this time, but withe are withe and the solid colors don't sparkle

Third: The lappy it's more sleek than the 9300, have a subwoofer with best sound than the dell, although with less volume and has a very clever remote control in the new ex pcmcia.

The card reader read memory stick, and mmc moreover sd cards.

This lappy it's very silent and the sata disc is very quick and silent.

The cons: when unplug and use battery, the 3d performance it's pathetic and it's impossible play with decent framerates.

The palmrest is very hot.

I apologize for my english If someboy don't understand somethin I can try explain better.

Thanks

Thanks for telling about this notebook. I'm planning on buying the M4438-model with M760 or M770 CPU and WUXGA screen.

Are you planning on improving the sound-situation in your notebook? As you know the integrated sound card isn't really that good. I was planning on buying the Creative PCMCIA Audigy2 ZS -sound card until I heard that these new models don't have PCMCIA slots, only the newer ExpressCard slot.

How do you like the feel of the notebook? Does it feel sturdy? How about the keyboard?

Have you tested this notebook with games? I'd be very interested to hear whether this notebook can run Half-Life 2 in higher resolutions with AA and AF effects on.

Im writing a review. Im not finished yet. However not anything about HF2. Only 3DMark scores and some other games but no scores from games, only how my eye appreciates the games

Belch please include a lot of pictures for us! There aren't any good ones floating around the internet

Well, as I was interested by that Fujitsu, I read a lot of opinions about it here and there.
Sure it's well designed, sleeker and sexier than 93OO. But it seems that the thing may get Very Hot, maybe design doesn't provide enough and good airflow.
As for benchmarks, the Fujitsu GPU settings out of the box are higher than Dell 9300 ones. About the screen, from what I have read (mainly german and french owners) it's good but far from a Sony killer. Great for some, just average for others.
IMHO Dell 9300 is a winner in term of quality/price. It's just a pity the choice Dell made with screens which leads to kind of a lotery.
