8890 Usb Problems

Thread Starter
I recieved my Sager 8890 yesterday. I'm running Windows XP Pro w/ SP1. I installed all drivers, per instructions. However, only 2 of my usb 2.0 ports work. I've already uninstalled them in the device manager, and already reinstalled the chipset drivers. I was just wondering if any of you had experienced this problem and had found a correction. Unfortunately, I think that the problem might be physical in nature, which would mean the loss of my laptop for a few days, which is a major downfall. If anyone can help, please do!

right click "my computer"
click on "properties"
click on tab "hardware"
click on "device manager" button
locate "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and press "+" sign next to it
right click on "USB Root Hub"
click on "properties"
click on "power management" tab
uncheck "Allow computer to turn this device off to save power"
press "OK"
Repeat procedure for each "USB Root Hub"

hope this works...i had the same issue on my compaq x1000.

My computer's doing the same thing.... I just unchecked everything, and still only two USB's function. I'll trying rebooting, see if that helps... BTW, are there any BIOS settings that perhaps we may have missed? I'm using an optical mouse to test, so it should blink on during bootup. However, it just sits there dead when connected to the two non-working ports...

UGH... I rebooted, and NOTHING changed. I looked through the BIOS, and there was only a single USB related setting: Legacy USB support. Looks like we're looking at an RMA...

How good is Sager @ turn-around time on RMA'ed stuff? I'm calling tech on Monday, and will post the fix (Hopefully there is one) when I get it. Else I'll let you know what they say.

Ok- I'm gonna try doing a windows repair install. Hopefully this will correct it...

Tell me how it goes... If it works, we don't have to spend the $30 to send it back to California. The turnaround time for Sager is 48hours, with you paying for shipping one way, your choice, and sager paying for shipping back to you 2-day shipping.

ARG!
I tried the repair install, nothing. Once again, tried reinstalling the chipset drivers...nothing. Tried installing the via usb 2.0 drivers (I think that's what the chip is), nothing. So it seems like RMA here we come...that sucks.

Hm... I emailed sager about the problem already, and I'll let you know how it turns out. I may just ignore the situation though, since I'll never actually use all four at once. (Also because I don't have the money left to send it back to them... ). Well, if there is a software fix to the problem, that'll be really cool... Any other 8890's with the problem?

I wish I could ignore the situation, but I have a portable hdd that is usb 2.0, a printer (usb), and a wireless mouse/keyboard that's usb...sigh.
I guess I'll have to find a way to send it back...college isn't exactly condusive to having money...lol
I hope it's something that makes sager say:

Hey, you're probably better off than me... I'm a poor, jobless high school senior sans car. I blew all my money on just buying the laptop, I don't even have the $30 it takes to send it back...

I'm lucky, I only own 4 usb devices in my home: a scanner, a pda, a digicam, and a mouse. I can have the scanner plugged in default, the PDA can sync through IR, and digicam can be swapped quickly, and I'm used to using the touchpad. Since I travel to school with the laptop, I keep it light and I skip the mouse, digicam, and scanner, which leaves only a single USB device: the PDA. I don't even use the USB connection to that anymore since IR is just so much more convienent... All my printers are either ethernet w/ print server, or parallel (yes, i'm old school, no usb printers for me, yet). I also have no USB2 hard drive, since I got 120gb of RAID in the laptop. I don't like carrying anything extra around...

*Rant*
I'm pretty freakin pissed wth sager right now. It's a pile of **** that when I got my laptop it was defective, yet I still have to pay to ship it back to them so they can fix it? What bull. This is what tech said to me:"You know you can buy a port replicator for $30 or so." That's not what really matters to me. It really makes me that I can spend $3,000 on a laptop, and yet it came defective and I need to pay to get it fixed. I don't know what kind of customer service that is, but damnit- It sucks. I was on the phone arguing for about 45 minutes before I hung up and got an rma number. I'm sorry- But this experience is going to be in my memory when I order my next laptop, and it probably won't be a sager if I get any more **** from them.
*End Rant*

this is how i installed it from format to install. after setting up windows xp and installing xp-sp 1. i went to the hardware screen and found in "other devices" usb root contoller or something like that. i just right clicked it and selected update driver and it worked like a charm.

kay1,

Please PM or email me who you talked to at Sager and the RMA number issued to you so this can be taken care of.

jamesshuang,

Have you heard back from Sager yet?
Sager checked into the 4 USB port thing you mentioned and they haven't found any that would duplucate the problem. They want to get your unit in to see what the cause is.
Yes, Sager has replied to me, but the were simply asking if I had SP1 installed, which I did. I think I may have a hardware problem as well, but again, I may just be forced to ignore it if it requires sending it back.
Ok, new email from sager: I'm stuck with an RMA. I truthfully don't know what to do. I literally don't have a cent... I owe my parents a couple hundred dollars right now for running overbudget, so I don't have enough money for shipping. I don't know what to do, any suggestions?

Hey Kay1
So I heard Sager had to replace your laptop. I'll probably be looking around my couch for some spare change to fulfill the shipping costs, but how much did you pay for shipping, and what did you ship it with? Just to get an idea...
