I just received my 8890 yesterday and I'm having the same problem with 2 of the usb ports. The 2 closests to the power connector don't work. I've tried unchecking the power management feature and that didn't help. I hope Sager addresses this soon. Other than this problem, I love the 8890.
Well i noticed that after i updated my 8890 with sp1 2 of my usb ports -the ones farthest from the ps - didnt work, so now i came to this thread and tried the fix-unchecking "Allow computer to turn this device off to save power" in the device manager. the fix worked great guys, thans
I tried unchecking the power management and it didn't help. I still have 2 dead USB ports. I plug into the ports with a USB mouse or an external USB hard drive and I don't even get power to the devices. Absolutely nothing. I bought the laptop from PC Torque and I got it with XP PRo pre-installed. It already had service pack 1 on it as well as all of the drivers. I tried deleting all of the usb ports from device manager and re-installing the chipset drivers from CD. When I rebooted, it discovered all of the ports again, but the 2 are still dead. I'm suprised sager doesn't test all of the ports before they ship. With several people having this problem, it seems like it's a software issue of some kind.
Those who are having this problem, did you install windows xp yourself or did it come pre-installed like mine? I wonder if it works with just a plain install of windows xp without SP1 or chipset drivers? I've been working on PC's for 15 years, I'm A+ certified and I'm still stumped on this one.
Maybe it is hardware defect. Any ideas greatly appreciated. I just hate to send it back for this because I doubt I'll ever use more than 2 usb ports at a time anyway.
I'm pretty sure this is a hardware based problem. I got an email from Sager saying they had to replace kay1's laptop because the ports simply don't work at all. I chose to ignore the problem: why bother sending in the laptop for $30 when a 4 port USB hub costs $10?
LOL If you pay 3k for a lappy and have to pay $30 for RMA on a lappy that suppose to be covered under waranty that is a dam rip. Just like their 1k upgrade option for new mobo. Man Clevo makes great machines but $30 to return something that you just bought come on now what a RIP.
This sucks, I have had my 8890 since they came out and just got another (3rd) USB device and it doesn't work because only two of my ports work. The two closest to the PS do not work. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and unchecking the power management thing but nothing works.
Sorry to bump this old post, but for anyone who cares, I shipped my laptop today via ground, and past the 30 day limit. Which means I'm without my 8890 for 2 weeks, at least! Oh well, at least I'll finally have my USB problem resolved...
Strike 1. Unhelpful Sager Tech man. Rambled off a few things to check. Maybe the one port doesn't have enough power, try one with power source. Take one memory chip out. Then he said call back if not fixed and hung up. Usually tech support for companies walk you through diagnosing the problem, not this one. Trying again.
