Full Screen On Extended Desktop

Thread Starter
I'm using extended desktop and would like to display an animation in Full Screen on a secondary display (a projector) and have my presentation notes on the primary display (the laptop's lcd). However, whenever I perform full screen mode in Windows Media Player (or other media players) on the secondary display, the video (in full screen) jumps back to the primary display! Other applications behave the same way or in another strange manner when in Full Screen. (PowerDVD seems to behave well however). The video card is ATI.

I'd appreciate if someone where to confirm this behavior on their system. Indicate if you have an ATI or NVIDIA card and what media player/app did you use.

Is there anyway to improve this strange/buggy behavior (I could make the projector the primary display and the lcd the secondary but I need the icons and toolbar on the lcd).

Can someone confirm that the same thing is happening on his/her system.

I'm sorry. I thought this was a question.

I see you've made a exclamatory statement.

If it was a question. That link would answer your question. Sorry about the misunderstanding. One of these "!" would've helped.

Well, I kind of solved the problem. I used ATI HYDRAVISION's desktop manager (any other manager will most likely do as well) to move windows to specific display using hot keys. So now when I open an application in full screen and it shows on the primary displahy I have to hit a hot key to move the full screen to the secondary display.

Still, when Windows Media Player is in full screen on secondary display and I try to do something on the primary display, the full screen mode turns off. But I think that this is a problem with the Media Player.

Bump. I changed the wording in the first post.

-> Can anyone who has an external monitor nearby just confirm that the same thing is happening on their system so I can rule out my video card/driver/other settings.

Had to deal with the same problem with my desktop and TV out. (Geforce MX 400 64mb) Either the video doesn't show at all or it cuts off and only shows a square of video. The solution for my Desktop was to make the TV the primary display. I guess it just doesn't have the capability can't handle both displays to their full potential.

I haven't had the same problem with my laptop though (Radeon 9000 32MB). Maybe because I use a monitor and not a TV, or maybe it's more a powerful and more recent video card.

Can you mention what media player did you use?

I also have a Radeon mobility 9K but 64mb (on a 600m system). It happens both if the second display is connected via s-video or vga port.

Windows Media Player and PowerDVD

mich43L,

I think the problem you're having is similar to the problem I had with my ATI 9200 card on the desktop.

Give this a try.

Set the secondary display as a "Clone View" (Display Properties -> Settings -> Advance -> Displays)

then in the "Clone Mode Options" (Display Properties -> Settings -> Advance) under the "Set Video Aspect ratio to", select the "Full screen video".

What this does (for me) is that when you play videos ( in Windows Media Player) in window mode on your primary display, the video will be "cloned" onto the secondary display in full screen mode. As long are you don't minimize the windows media player window, you can do other thing on your primary display without interrupting the full screen video on your secondary display.

My ATI driver seems to have a little different menu design or perhaps it's because I'm using omega drivers. But I did find something analogous to what you mentioned in the Overlay tab and then clicking on Theater Mode Options button. The help menu in these options does seem to address these type of display issues I'm having but I have to play around with this more. Thanks.

Woah! It worked exactly as you described it would. I was a little skeptical beacause you said cloned mode but yes indeed you have to be in clone mode and not in extended desktop mode. For anyone interested how this is done in omega drivers: clone the display to the external display and make sure it is the secondary display, Go to the Overlay tab and hit the "Theater Mode Options" button, select theater mode and hit apply. The video will display in full screen on the secondary display and you can work on the primary without disturbing it but don't minimize the window! Thanks xsquare!

The only problem is that since it is a cloned and not extended mode, both displays have to have the same resolution. So if I use the naitive resolution of the laptop's lcd, things (especially text) will look very small on the extenal display or that high resolution might not be supported by the external display altogether and nothing will be shown. And if I use a non-naitive resolution, things on the laptop's lcd will look fuzzy.

Michael,

Check out Windows media player classic

I got mine with the k lite codec pack.

But the player will stay in full screen mode on my 2nd display while i do stuff on the main display and will also work with independent resolution

Extended Desktop correct? Not Clone mode? I'll try the player. Like I mentioned some (e.g,. PowerDVD) players don't jump back to the primary display and don't close full screen when you change from their focus (e.g., click outside their area). So you're saying the Classic Player doesn't do that? Ok I try it. I just wanted to use the one in XP because that's what I always used for everything.

EDIT: CAN SOMEONE RECOMMEND A UNIVERSAL MEDIA PLAYER DOES DOES NOT EXHIBIT THIS BEHAVIOR
