My Western Scorpio 80g HD 5400rpm drive

is a clunker

repeat after me "should have ordered the momentus"

I mention it as based upon their (very helpful) response and as to what I have seen on the dell forum threads, this is not uncommon

I got the drive after comparing the review on toms hardware, which was linked to here

I have returned it and reordered a seagate momentus 80gb. Without reopening that rpm thread, I need an 80 GB drive for video work so the 7200 hitatchi (although same price) wasnt for me

Just to let you know, the scorpio worked fine in external USB drive, but in the dell it kept making loud ticking noises and was louder than travelstar it replaced overall. Software drive checking from WD passed it but their tech rep says software can't catch a mechanical problem and failure could be imminent

The build date was nov 04 in case theres a bad batch (not saying there is, just a heads up)

momentus is on the way. Why not the 80gb travelstar? Just for the heck of it and momentus is supposed to be fast and quiet.

Cheers

I just called Dell today and told them about the clicking and all, I am being shipped a new HD. I am hoping I get a non WD one.

WD and Maxtor to me has lost some points in my eyes due to the quality of there HDs. I still use them and all but it scares me that they only have a 1yr warranty on them now instead of 3yr warraties like seagate and samsung. As I upgrade my drives and build new systems you can guess what brands I will not use for my personal systems.

Thanks for the info though about calling WD directly. The replacement drive they sent you, was it refurbished or new and does it make the clicking sounds also?
