HP nc8230 gone!

I noticed that the HP/Compaq nc8230 got great reviews but not a lot of talk on this forum; however, a week or so ago, there were at least 12 vendors who had them in stock. I checked today and they're gone... which tells me that the excellent reviews on CNET and pcmag were enough to drive the consumer to buy the laptop.

Anyone got one so we can get some feedback?

On Cnet they have the list of vendors selling them. As of yesterday when i checked, the only one that are out of stock is PCCONNECTION.

CDW and PCMALL has it in stock.

It looks like a great laptop, awesome dimension and weight.

Keep in mind that it does not come standard with optical drive and if you get one it is external because the laptop is only 1.1" thick.

But it does come standard with 3 years warranty

Why isn't this up at HPs site? I wanted to look into it for its business DCC workstation laptop version of it, but neither it or this one I can find on their site.

And when you said it didn't have a optical drive standard, did you mean you can get one with it internal or get it with external or it is always external?

Here's the link to it:

The 3D product tour shows that it has a MultiBay drive bay, so internal ROM drive options are available.

Hmm that must be a future config piece, similar to the X600 w/128MB video. Because right now you can't config that either even if the spec said it is available.

I guess I should have specified that I was looking for the 2.0 ghz reseller version. That is the one that is no longer availabel (as in sold out). You are correct, there is a 1.86 ghz and 1.7 ghz version that seems to be in stock, but for the price, the 2.0 ghz version seems much more resonable.

Exactly, it was the 2.0Ghz i looked at yesterday. Hmm, odd..

WVA Display???

Hmmm, look slike a pretty nice setup. My only questions are what is a WVA Display? WHat does it stand for?

Also, do you think the CD Drive is upgradeable to a DVD Burner?

All info is truly appreciated!

This is a nice system, but expensive.

It is 1.1" thick and weight under 6lbs. Which is pertty nice. I believe it ment WSXGA

I have it narrowed down between this and the Asus V6V. It would be nice to know which has the better display. The Ambient Light Sensor function on the HP seems like a nice feature. And, the drive bay on the HP is a Multi-bay, the V6V isn't. I don't think I'd make much use of the Multi-bay outside of a ROM drive.

The dimensions of both systems are about similar, with the exception of the HP being 1" wider, 13" (V6V) vs. 14" (nc8230).

Pricing is about comparable for both. Tough call.

I would go with the V6V, however this HP model specified you could have 128MB video as a configurable option.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the V6V as well. The only thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger is the price tag! But, it is the system I want. And, I am in need of a notebook. So, there's a trade-off between waiting for the price to come down and being without a notebook. Besides, I dont anticipate any price drop being significant enough to go without a notebook for much longer.

By the way, here's a mini-review of the HP nc8230. http://www.notebookreview.com/forums...TOPIC_ID=13519

That site is way too annoying for me to find the 8240. I'm partial to getting a workstation laptop as that's what I do, digital animation. And this guy is nice in the size department, but I can't find anything but the flash interactive about it. I'd like to price it out against the m70. I think it'll be close, which puts the m70 ahead as it has a much better video card, even though it is a bit heavier.

I ended up going with the nc8230 after a lot of debating. I configured an nc8230 on the HP web site with:

1.86GHz CPU
512MB DDR2-533
X600 Radeon with 128MB of video memory.
40GB HD. (I have a 60GB 7200 RPM so I chose the lowest hard drive availalble.)
Bluetooth
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
Win XP Pro

So, pretty much similar specs to the V6V for about $25 less. It would have been much cheaper if it weren't for the sales tax. Oh well.

The other factors that influenced my decision were the WSXGA+ WVA display and MultiBay. Hopefully I'll be happy with my choice!

Yeah, you could configure the HP now. But what is interesting is on the configured version it say it is DDR-533, not DDR2-533.

One plus HP got over Asus is standard 3 years warranty, which is pretty nice considering 199 bucks from other places for 3 years.
