HP nc8230 gone! - Page 2

What is the Estimated Delivery date?
I checked the quick specs page for this sytem and it says that it takes DDR2 memory. My order status says DDR-533, however. I'll check it out myself once I receive the system. Not really a big deal to me though.

Yeah, the warranty is a bonus. A two year warranty from Asus isn't bad though. The 30-day dead pixel policy is great too.

Estimated ship date is 3/26. Not sure how they came up with a Saturday ship date. I opted for ground shipping, so hopefully I'll receive it by the end of next week.

Funny if you notice it is their "prebuilt" system say 04/11/05 delivery date, but their custom model say 03/26/2005 delivery date.

I'm not going to place a lot of faith in their ship date. Hopefully I won't be waiting forever for it though. We'll see what happens by early next week

The thing I don't know is whether the nc8230 uses a SATA or IDE interface. If it's SATA, then my Hitachi 7K60 does me no good for this system.

The datasheet shows and the configurable model show a 7200 RPM drive option, so I'm assuming I'm safe.

The nc8230 looks very tempting from a physical dimension point of view. Very small form factor that makes the 15.4" screen less of a burden to tote around. The hardware specs are very good also.

After reading some posts, I am also considering the nc8230 when I buy mid-April..

mclassic - please do an initial impression for us and post some pictures! (do you know of any link for the pictures for this one? I see two kind of pictures when I go to their website to congifure). Thank you.

Yeah, my only knock against it is that it's 14" wide, versus the V6V, which is 13" wide. But, that's to be expected with a 15.4" display. The nc8230 is shorter in depth by .5" So, I can live with a notebook that is only about .5" larger in overall dimension and about .5 pounds heavier.

Hmm, I do like the slim light weight, and if only I could see how expensive ('cause I know it will be) the 8240 will be with the FireGL 5000 chip (which btw, is better than the x600, essentially the x700 but for professional applications, CAD, DCC, etc).

Very temping, but I'm sure it'll be over 3k which is getting a bit insane. But considering I get $2600ish just configuring the non-firegl one I'm sure they'll tack on at least an extra $300 for that card

I wonder when it'll come out...grr!

FiloD, I will be sure to give initial impressions and a review of it when I receive it.

The best photos I've seen are from the PC magazine review of it. http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow/0,239...=143363,00.asp

I'll take some photos of it and post them when I receive it.

Yeah the HP NC8230 is a nice machine. The only thing is if you config it to be par up to let say Acer 8100, it is a lot more expensive. I guess given the size and weight it is worth it.

I am thinking on it too.

OooOOooOooooO. Remind me of the IBM Thinkpad design LoL!

answer. The durable magnesium-alloy chassis wraps a 15.4-inch widescreen display
, but the machine still weighs a reasonable 6.2 pounds. Its combination of features, design, and performance make it our Editors' Choice among mainstream business portables.

Yeah, I thought about that too. The Acer 8100 is a great value considering what you get. But, I'm more comfortable with the HP. I'm not a fan of silver notebooks either.

mclassic - is the chassis magnesium for the nc8230? Not that it will be a dealbreaker, just want to know. Thanks.
ya know, if you look at the size it really isn't that much smaller, 14.3" as opposed to 14". The main one is 1.2-1.4" vs 1.1". The weight also isn't that much different, less than half a pound. I've seen 6.1 and 5.8lbs listed, so vs 6.3 lbs for the acer your looking at max half a pound. Which, well, I agree is pretty nice.

I think the fact it is $500 or so more than the 8103 that I'm thinking of going ahead and getting is the big point that turns me off it. Still would like to see a 8240 spec'ed out though.

Yes, the nc8230 has a magnesium lid.

Tellerve, are you going with the Acer Travelmate? Looking at its specs and features, as well as price, might influence me to reconsider my purchase.

The dealbreaker for me is that the ACER *STILL* does NOT have their ezDock available anywhere. If this is being pushed as a business alternative, they f*cked up bad! Business users typically want a docking solution that they can buy, not read about!
I thought you could get the ezdock now? I guess it isn't out, although I've seen a picture and it is pretty small while still having a lot of connectors.

I've been thinking about a laptop for ages, and when the 810x came out I got really excited. So far nothing has completely gotten me off it. Maybe for a short time, but I keep coming back. Namely the dell m70, which is vastly more expensive, but has the quadro 1400, and as I do digital animation it would be great, but also cost $1000 more. It also has a serial port which is nice, only in that I need it, *sigh* legacy.

Speaking of which, does anyone know of a program that makes your computer think you have a serial through a usb or some such ability? A friend told me there is one so I wouldn't need to get a usb to serial dongle. That's about the only "problem" I have with the 810x.

Tell you what, I'll trade you the TM 8100 DVI port for the nc8230's serial port! I have absolutely no use for a serial port. Ideally, it would have been nice to get an nx8220, because I don't like touchpoint sticks. So, take that way, the touchpoint mouse buttons and the serial port and maybe I save an ounce or two on weight!

I haven't heard of such a program that registers your USB port as a serial port. I've only heard of the dongle.

You might want to post your question to the general forum. Maybe someone will have an answer for you.
