Screen

I am considering buying the M460 XL. Are you still happy with the screen? I was in Best Buy today and compared a Gateway with ultrabright with an older Emachines notebook with a regualr screen. The ultrabright screen was so much sharper and clear.

How is your battery life?

Thanks,

Nice wallpaper. What wallpaper is that?

Also, looks like it has one of those eraser point things (what are they called again?). haven't seen one of those on anything besides an IBM notebook for a while

currently typing this on my new M460.

the good: It IS fast I got a FM 3dmark03 score of 3182 Here is the link

the bad: I miss indicators for Caps lock, Numloc, a button to activate deactivate the mousepad, buttons for mute and up-dn volume (real buttons not function hold buttons.

The realy bad:
my right hand is frying hot right now because the Hard drive generates a TON of heat in there. I have to raise my wrist off of the surface. Way hotter than I think is acceptable. Its mostly just in that one spot but WOW its hot. Lame! my old HP was always cool to the touch.

Edit:
the HD is only part of the heat problem. I looked in there and there is a daughter board exactly where the heat problem is. the Hdd is layers down from the localized heat zone so it could not be the sole source of the heat. My guess is its that daughter board. There is shielding and foam over the daughter board so that supports the theory, and also suggests they are aware of the heat problem. I could not see any markings on it don't know what it is.
Got a 11300 on 3D mark 01 couldnt post cause it didnt like the cpu speed changes the Pentium M does.

As for the Display. It is Nice. I like it. it is not glass shiny look. I think that would be anoying for glare. glare is not a problem with it nor is the gloss finish.
It looks kinda wierd (fuzy and streched) in any other resolution than the native screen resolution 1280x800, but It looks AWSOME in that mode and there is not realy any reason to change out of it. It compaires to the 1024x768 of my privious lapy in size of text and such so it looks very normal. the Brightness is great! hope it dosn't fade too quickly...

I didn't notice the heat problem from the hard drive. If you use the notebook on my lap while sitting, it does heat up on the bottom right, but on a table with adequate air flow, it does not heat up too much, even when gaming. I do agree that the screen is great. I've had lots of compliments about the clarity and vivid colors of the screen.

BTW 4WDrift.. which CPU did you get?

Which CPU?
I got the Pentium M750. The heat spot is not the CPU. the Cpu is more under the GH keys. Its that dang little board. I might give em a call about it.
You can see in the picture its 130 degrees. Not comfortable to type! at least not in a 70 degree office. If I was outside in the winter I would think it was great!

the pictures I loaded are
1 front shot (dosnt do justice to the picture)
2 glare shot (would be TONS of glare with a glassy screen) glare is not a problem.
3 Infra Red shot showing the temp & where.

The daughterboard you referring to is Wi-Fi card from Intel (Intel 2200BG). It is hot as hell.... I have same problem I thought I was hallucinating. I thought since this laptop is based on Sonoma it should run cooler then first Centrino.

i was very, very close to buying this machine (b/c you get so much for the price) -- but all this talk about hot wrists is changing my mind. i'd be using it mostly as a word processor. does it get hot when surfing the web and word processing? the heat factor seems outrageous & unacceptable!!

I'm in the same boat as Beeee C... this Wi-Fi card, what does it do and can you get the laptop without?

heat

The Heat prob seems to be spotty. some have it some don't.

As for the board I was talking about being the WiFi, It is not.
The WiFi is on the bottom under a easily assessable door. I just flipped my notebook over and felt the WiFi board, and it is no heat culprit. Its disabled anyway...
I had my notebook damn near totally apart before and I could just barely see into where the heat is coming from. Not the same area as the WiFi.

The Dauterboard (Attached to the main board) I wrote of is perhaps a power regulator. I am convinced it is the source of the heat.
I will send the thing in for repair soon.

I am typing right now on my M460. I have never had a problem with heat from the location everyone is complaining about. I think is laptop is wonderful. The LCD is awesome. The keyboard is alright but flexes when pressing a key on the left side of the keyboard, but it is not all the worrisome. The touchpad is nice. I like the scroll pad, too. The battery life with the twelve cell is awesome. I get 6+ hours on this babe. I have the port replicator. I just wished Gateway put a DVI port on the replicator. The laptop feels very solid and sturdy. The videeo card is awesome as well. Played America's Army from www.americasarmy.com (Great army game made by the US Army and it's FREE) . The WiFi built in card is nice. I have a Dlink DI-624 with a Indoor antenna, model ANT-0400 which is fairly cheap from Dlink. I can be in my jeep over two hundred feet away when the router is in a solid concrete building at work on the second floor with no windows. The signal is at 3 bars. i Recommend to upgrade any router to a stronger antenna than the cheap ones that come with the router. I just wish I bought the ANT-0700 model antenna which has a 7db gain than the 4db gain I have on the ANT-0400. The M460XL is great. I am returning it for the M680XL. To get the 256 MB graphics card. I am definitely getting the 12cell batt. What is nice is that I do not have to return the port replicator or the 12 cell batt for the M460 model b/c it is the same items used on the M680 models. I just have a problem looking for a notebook bag for this monster (M680 ) I am going to school next week and I need something to use in the lecture halls (classes) on my college campus.
