also, do I need to order the windows xp (is this operating system the same as software?) or does the Sager come with the cd burning, dvd playing software that I will need? What are the must peripherals to make the machine function? How stripped down is it?

Unless you have your own operating system you'd like to use, yes you should order windows XP, assuming that's your OS of choice. Although the operating system is technically software, you'll probally never hear it referred to it that way. Sager comes with i belive Nero and WinDVD, regardless of whether or not you order an OS from Sager. For the peripherals i would just say some sort of laptop desk (www.laptopdesk.net), a better bag if you don't care too much for the one sager provides, and a usb mouse if you don't like touchpads too much.
