For once we actually agree on something...

I used to have a RAID 0 setup on my desktop and all of my stuff (INCLUDING boot & shutdown times) were faster. Loading and installing my games was ALOT faster b/c I run Alcohol 120% with a virtual CD drive and installing programs via an ISO was incredibly fast.

Plus having a RAID setup is beneficial to me b/c my school work will greatly benefit from a RAID 0 setup. I don't have a RAID 0 setup right now tho b/c my on-board RAID chip doesn't let me change the cluster size.

There is a 64 MB M10, but it's not the easiest thing to find nowadays. Back when the pseudo-vaporware German laptops were released with the M10, they had 64 MB as an option. Of course, I never really heard of anyone having these laptops (other than a couple of internet reviews), and the seller no longer offers the system. I tend to believe that the Gericom Overdose Radeon 9600 was a more or less a test system put out by ATI a couple of months early so that they could claim that they made their deadlines.

But I digress. The point is - ATI says that they offer a 64 MB version, and we'll probably see some more in the future. Some of the reviews done on test systems by hardware sites are on the 64 MB version.

RAID will not affect your 3D Mark scores...you will see improved load times in games and OS will also speed up...WITH 0 Level RAID...

Go to level 1 and you could see a drop in performance...this im not sure of but mirroring does cause performance drops if what I have seen is true...but Raid 1 is safer than Raid 0...this I am sure of.

I prefer Raid 5 and would love to build a desktop/server with this array...it will be fantastic...trouble is that there are so many controllers out there and not all of them are worth looking at as the solution.

Raid 0 will boost your overall system speed but I doubt it will affect your FPS - it will also result in a less stable system considering that Hard Drives that are built for laptops have shown a greater tendency to fail than the desktop variants...

Think about it - if performance means more to you than your data - go with level 0 and backup frequently...if your data is all important then go with level 1...

And Divine - all the HDD's used in out Raid 5 array were enormous and you dont backup a Nuclear reactors data...the database changed every 20s which makes it impractical...

They are now using mirrored arrays but they are not happy with it...

Ah.. but that is why i said desktop users, and not the afformentioned engineers.

Anyway, RAid1 will be a bit slower (around 10% from what i hear).
Regardless of the "increased" failure risk, i will keep on loving raid 0. My array could die, but since i have sutff backed up, no worries. The same should be said for any home or bussiness user though.. even with Raid 1, it never hurts to be safe, and have off site sotrage...

GO DVD WRITERS!!!

with close to 5GB of storage...I can backup all the data I have for the next 6 months on a single DVD (excluding videos and pics of course...)

If I get RAID - I will get RAID level 0 and backup frequently. But I dont think i'll get the 8890...much too big for my taste...must be fantastic to use hardware RAID on a laptop...is this the first time a laptop has been designed to support hardware raid?? anyone know if this is a first??

it may not be the first (its possible some workstation laptops have em), but this most defonatly is the first consumer version with it..
