9300 owners: Tell us about your WXGA+

Ok, we have a 30 page thread about the WUXGA LCD panels on the 9300's and I know it's been done for the 9200, but I'd be curious to hear what people who got the 9300 with a WXGA+ display think of their particular LCD panel.

The packing slip they include with your system isn't always accurate. The best way to know for sure which panel you have is to log into your account on Dell, select My System & Peripherals and then click on your service tag. If you haven't already added it, you can find it on your paperwork and also on the barcode on the bottom side of your laptop. When I click on mine I get:

T4976LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, WXGA+, STANDARD PANELS WORKING GROUP, 17, LENGTH/LONG

Which is the LG Philips WXGA panel. It also problably doesn't hurt to use something like Powerstrip to read the EDID info. Mine comes up with LPL0000 which confirms an LG Philips part.

So far I'm mostly happy with the display. Is bright, colors are good, very minimal light leakage, etc... My only complaint is that light colors have a somewhat shiny and grainy look to them. Wouldn't really call it sparkle, but it is still somewhat hard on the eyes. Almost makes solid colors look a little out of focus...if that's even possible.

Here's what I got according to Dell:
X4766 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, WXGA+, STANDARD PANELS WORKING GROUP, 17, SAMSUNG

PowerStrip says it is a SEC5857.

I am extremely happy with the display. It is very bright, has no light leakage and the colors seem to be very good. My 8600 in comparison, sucks, but that was an Hitachi display. Whites on that one are very yellowed compared to this one. I never realized how much until I got this one. I don't really notice any sparkle. I did adjust the gamma and contrast down a little to make the colors even better.

I have the WXGA+ on a 9200 and it is wonderful. It's like a sheet of paper fitting right into the frame. Very bright, very crisp, easy to see on very low power setting, and works well in the sunlight. No bleeding color, no dead pixels, no darkness in the corners, or any other odd type things happening. Movies are a joy to watch.

Are you able to lookup the service tag to see exactly which part you have?

I have the
X4766 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, WXGA+, STANDARD PANELS WORKING GROUP, 17, SAMSUNG

and love it!
But...I'm a noob and would probably love anything...lol (ok...maybe not that screen that shows an example of leakage)
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.
Now...if I can just find a cool bag and decent lap desk, I'll be all set.

Ya know...I may even have a little sparkle...but it doesn't bother me at all
Games look good and so do DVDs so I'm happy.

I entered it into the Canada download area, but it doesn't show me anything more than stuff I can download. I'm looking on the packing slip again. W5411 (in a different column). Maybe that helps?

I'm dowloading powerstrip to see what it says.

I can't read anything from the monitor.

All EDID gives me is ...

manufacturer MS_
Model ID MS_0000
Serial Number 0 (0000000)
Date of Man. 1990, ISO week 0

whats the default resolution on the WXGA?

does it have any resemblance to the sparkle that the 9200 screens had?

WXGA+ is 1440x900. The WXGA+ screens don't quite get the sparkle that the WUXGA screens do, but they still aren't without problems. There are 3 models that I'm aware of. The following summary is based on what I've read here.

T4976 - LG Philips - Some sparkle like grainyness reported. Usually has pretty good colors and bright whites. Cooler color temp than Samsung panels. Usually very little in light leakage.
W5411 - Samsung - Not many reports of sparkle. Seen one report of severe light leakage. Whites tend to be slightly 'yellow' from what I've read. This part number often shows up on packing lists regardless of what they actually installed.
X4766 - Samsung - Most people seem to like this Some prefer T4976 over this one. Like leakage seems about average. Inconsistencies reported with this panel (ie, two X4766 side by side produce different results).

I have one on order - would be interested in hearing more of people's experience with the WXGA+ screen.

so I'm still undecided about whether to get a WUXGA or the WXGA? Are the WXGA overal better for viewing? (less sparkle whiter whites sound good to me)

Also on my dektop I prefer the resolution at 1280x1024, and not a big fan of viewing my monitor for long periods of time at 1600x1200, as its a little too small for me. I have never really viewed a Widescreen lappy at higher res. Is it similar to my crt monitor at 1600x1200?

do you think its really worth the 200 more for me to get the WUXGA or "settle" for the WXGA?

thanks

another question

also the free upgrades include a "IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless 2915 Internal Wireless (802.11 a/b/g, 54Mbps) Special Offer"

but there is an option for Wireless Personal Networking Card:

Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth Internal(2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate) and you can get it for no extra charge. Does that mean I should get it installed as well? or go with the "none" option under personal Networking Card.

xga is the way to go for you. you wouldn't want the WUXGA because of the small text size.

You don't know what Bluetooth is for? I don't see any reason not to get it if it's free, but I wouldn't get it if it wasn't free. I've never seen them offer it for free, though, it's $50.

If your desktop monitor is 17" or greater and you perfer 1280x1024 resolution, then you should probably not get the WUXGA LCD as its resolution is 1920 * 1200.

i have the J9662, and i love it, little bits of light leakage nothing drastic tho. no dead pixels, they're are some sparkles, but unless i'm sitting really close to it, i can barely see them, as i lay down with it on my lap right now, i can see the sparkles at all.
