Laptop does not detect DVD drive

My Sager keeps randomly failing to detect my Toshiba DVD writer. I thougt it was a fluke at first, but it has happened at least 15 times. Here is what normally happens:

1. Windows boots normally and I am able to use the dvd drive. Sometimes, when I switch out CD's or DVD's within Windows, the entire drive disappears from the "My Computer" list, and I am unable to access it again or make it reappear.

2. I reboot my computer, and the bios detects sometimes.

3. Within Windows, I go to the control panel to "install new hardware", find the Toshiba drive on the list, double-click it, and it works fine. Many times it is not on the list (I'm guessing because it was not detected in the bios), and I have to restart again.

4. Repeat step 3 until the drive magically reappears again.

The only problem is that now it is not reappearing at all. I changed my boot order to CD first and inserted a bootable XP CD, but it didn't even detect it. It booted straight into Windows off of the HD. Does this mean that the drive is defective or that there is a bad connection within the laptop? Has anyone else had similar issues with their Sager?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

i had this EXACT problem with my EX7. I had 2 toshiba drives (1 DVDRW and other Combo) and it was doing this. I also had a dead pixel, so I skipped the troubleshooting and sent it right back to them. I'm getting it back on Tuesday.
