Linux Help on a Sager 5670 Please

Thread Starter
I have used just about every new distro out there and still have problems getting them to work on my Sager computer. I am fairly new to the Linux world and thought the cross over might not be so bad but it's turning out to be a bad experience.

!. I've tried: Red Hat, Xandros, Knoppix (several version), My Mepis and others.

The problems I'm I can't seem to work through:
1. Configuring my WiFi
2. Configuring my ethernet
3. Getting on line with the on board ethernet card.
4. Video drivers for ATI 9700
5. and a host of other frustrating problems too numerous to mention.

I have no idea how to compile and all that seems foreign to me and a bit scary to say the lease.

I'm sure once I get online and get my heels wet I can learn and get the hang of any distro but getting started seems a bit out of my league and i'm sure there are others who would love to leave the Microsoft Monkey behind.

Using "My Mepis" live CD, my on board WiFi card (Atheros) sees the unsecured networks, connects but does not get an IP so I can't go online and does nothing else.

Under any distro, my gigabyte lan configures but I can't get connected at all.

I get messages while booting that says my Wlan is not configured and it times out.

My question, man does it have to be this hard? And, how did you manage if you are using this same laptop to get Linux to work with it. I am starting to think that my Laptop is 95% of the problem because I can get my desktop on line all day under Suse 9.0 so it must be something in this laptop that does not like SuSe or vice versa.

I currently have Suse 9.2 pro installed. I am open for any suggestions and please help. One note, if you have suggestion to add remember I am really new to the Linux world and if you give me instruction please keep them at a third grade level. I appreciate any and all help.

Thanx

Check the stickies. MMarkin and my self are running Linux on our 56xx. I had a few issues that I worked out. Are you sure you've got a 5670. The gig ethernet wasn't available till the 5680 and the ATI 9700 was in the 5690. Asto connecting but not getting an
IP try this sudo dhcpcd eth0 or wlan0 whatever it's listed as.

On my Fujitsu, MEPIS automagically recognized my Atheros. Before you mess with anything, go to the MEPIS OS Center (crossed hammer and wrench) and look at Network Interfaces. Specifically, look at the Wireless tab and make sure that your ESSID is correct and that it is set to Infrastructure. Check the Misc tab and make sure it is set to DHCP. Then check ath0 and make sure it is set to Start at system boot and use DHCP. Then go to the Status tab and stop and start ath0. Also, I suggest that you go to each tab (except lo) and uncheck Start at system boot for every interface you don't use. It will make it boot faster. Also, don't forget to hit the Apply button before you leave each tab.

With all due respect to the folks here. If they don't use MEPIS, they may not know the tweaks and MEPIS-unique drivers and tools. I suggest that you use the forum on MEPIS.org and mepislovers. Also, you are more likely to get the best help if you are using the latest version which is SimplyMEPIS3.3. Good luck.
