LCD Backlight Bug?

Thread Starter
Found an issue with the LCD backlight also. I'm wondeirng if it's specific to my machine or if others suffer from this.

My the LCD offers multiple levels of brightness by holding down Fn+Up or Down. I beleive their is 8 total levels. On mine, when i'm changing brightness levels, their is no difference between brightness level 2 and 3. If you scroll through your brightness levels a few times and watch the screen LCD backlight adjust, its like it skips a beat from 2 - 4. That's going from 2->4 or 4->2. Can anyone else try all their different backlight settings Fn+UpArrow or Fn+DownArrow a few times and see if they have any levels, maybe the same level as me where it doesn't change when they press it?

Try it in battery powered mode, as well as plugged in. Lets see others results.

Just tried it.....Yep...me too.
It's like there's no adjust between 2-4.

I just checked my 9200. It only has 7 levels, and they all work. So, it seems like it's just a QuickSet bug. I assume your BIOS only has 7 levels, right?

I dont use quickset. I beleive the bios lists 8 different levels also, not just 7.

If your screen shows a little brightness level indicator when you hit Fn-arrow, you are using QuickSet. It binds to various hot keys.

Yah, i'm not using quickset. I dont have anything on my screen. I never installed quickset after i formatted. The fn key combo's work even with out, so i had no reason to.

Bummer, that would make it a BIOS bug. I wonder if the latest BIOS fixes it.

Yep same here, strange..

Tried mine and there is a noticable change in brightness between all 8 levels. Have a 9300 with the LG WXGA+ panel...at least for now.

Oh, I have the latest A02 bios and it still does it. I see that Johare isn't having the issue and he is using a WXGA... perhaps it is a problem intermitten to the WUXGA? Hopefully we can find out when a few more people post.

I have 8 brightness levels on my 600m system.

Yes, quickset does have a bug with synchronizing the brightness levels with bios's settings (the gui bar skeeps a level or two) but the lcd's brightness is still adjusted because quickset only reports the brightness and isn't in actual control of it. This mostly happens when running on the battery. Hmm, I think I even know what the poor chap who programmed quickset did not take into account - when switching between the battery mode and ac mode with the system running the bios adjust the brightness automatically and quickset does not take into account that the brightness could be changed by anyother way than function keys. This is just a speculation of course.

A bug is a bug, they might as well know about it and fix it if possible.

no shucking fit! WTH difference does it make how many 'settings' there are, as long as you can adjust brightness up and down? I seriously wouldn't label this an 'aflliction' or similar plague....maybe a 'cold' or a 'mild cough'...

['But...this one goes to eleven! You see...?']

I guess the sparkles are an 'affliction' from what I've read, this seems rather paltry in comparison...

Although, 'a bug is a bug', indeed, so fuggit...

LOL yah it is close to irrelevent when compared to the other major issues talked about LCD's on this forum. I mainly started the thread to see if it was just mine, or everyone. If it was just mine, I would have definately wanted it repaired, could have been a sign of a faulty backlight or something more severe.

"but but level 3 back light setting is the optimum brightness for when you are on battery... its perfect power/readability ratio!"

Hey, this isn't an anal thing. Finding a bug in a complex system is a thrill similar to an astronomer finding a new star among billions and billions of existing stars. People will name this the "mbman brightness bug" after the discoverer

Oh, btw who writes dell's software (quickset, media experience, BIOSes, etc). I'm guessing it ain't in the good ol' US of A

Same here on my LG wuxga.
