transfering files from windows me to windows xp..help
ok i have a new laptop which uses windows xp and a old desktop which has windows me........first thing i did was connected the two of them using a crosscover ethernet cable........next i put my windows xp cd that came with my laptop into the windows me pc......

i picked file transfer files and settings and followed the steps when i get to select a transfer method i choosed direct cable, and then i click on next.. which goes to setup your serial connection, it tells you to go to the other computer and do the same like am doing on this one, then it says to click on autodetect on both, so when i do that.....it just stays autodecting and nothing else happens??? ...what is the problem, can some one help

set up a mshome connection on both and just share the files through a network

The serial connection does NOT use the ethernet connection, use the home network setup or internet sharing setup should work

it says wizard cannot locate your new computer...

Well whatever you're transfering, you should really invest in an external hard drive. Back up everthing that you want onto the hard drive, sweep it for viruses when you connect it to your winxp computer, then copy over the files. Not only have you made sure your files aren't infecting your new computer, but you now have an extra copy of all your data in case of a catastrophic hardware failure.

do you have the windows firewall turned on? if so try turning them off on both and search for the name of the computer again.

In addition to your firewall settings I think you need to enable file sharing on both PCs.
