I'm installing it on the 8886 now... I already installed it on my own lappy. I'll post benchmark results in my review. Here's where to get it from:

Finally, it is officially released. :-)

Hmm, I think i read something about how DirectX9 was a little too big for its own good. Are there any new games that currently require it?

DX9 is not a must have upgrade at this point. I have posted this in a couple of other threads. There really isn't anything out yet to speak of that requires it. There are some demos that show it off and a couple of games that can take advantage of it, but all my developer buddies say to hold off unless you are developing something specifically for DX9.

It can give you a few more FPS in some things, less FPS in others. Typical MS stuff.

This of course will not stop people from installing it, but since I am doing game dev work for DX8, I can't take the chance yet, so I have to hold off for a while. Probably the .a or .b release.

Eh, I like to have graphics stuff installed as it comes out :-) New drivers, directx stuff, etc. That's just me. So far, it's working great on both of my laptops and on all of my friends' laptops here (lol, once one person has something, everyone does). But, I can definitely understand the opposite position....

I understand completely. If it wasn't for people like you, we developers would never know about the bugs that do get found. Better sooner than later!

Just a warning to those who choose to install DX9 - you will get slower 3DMark2k1 scores after doing so. My 5660 dropped over 100 points. That's not a lot, but just be aware that it's not going to speed things up any, and I'm not aware of any games that are dependant upon it at this point.

Also, be aware that there's no way to uninstall DX9. You either have to use some third party app (which isn't typically reliable, and can mess up your OS), or completely reinstall your OS. My advise: make sure to create a system restore point before installing so that you can quickly revert back if you want to.

I normally like to immediately install updates, patches, etc, but after reading various threads on DX9, I'd personally wait a bit before installing it again.

It didn't lower my 3dmark scores on either of my two laptops... Granted, no games require it or take advantage of it, but it's completely backwards compatable with everything so it shouldn't cause problems like that... but of course, it's Microsoft, so who knows :-) Seeing your experiences, I'd give the same recommendation. Hopefully system restore actually restores all of those files... because with drivers I know it has trouble sometimes... Thanks for the warning!

Yes, and like I stated before, DX9 is exactly HOW much bigger than DX8? I hear it's a lot bigger; too big to be just for gaming, if you get my drift.

The download wasn't that big... it prolly added 10 megs total to my directx... Lol, believe me, if Microsoft was looking for spyware, they'd do it just through windows and windowsupdates and MSN internet, lol. Which they do, lol, in order to get their MSN8 "junkmail filters" hyped up, they have crap mail coming to every hotmail account, lol. Kinda dumb. Oh well.

I put it on my Desktop and have had no problems. (if you buy the game Impossible Creatures it install it) My son loves that game and when I put in on the installer said DX9 was required.

I hear 007 Nightfire has trouble if you have dx9, which ticks me off, but I'll have to try it later. Otherwise, I've seen absolutely no problems.
