My 3 weeks with my 4760

Thread Starter
Well I have hit the 3 week mark with my new toy. And here are a few observations.

Weight: It is slighty heavier than my old dreaded Sony
Vaio, but it has not been unmanagable.

Free Case: I have broken one of the zipper levers. I am shopping for a replacement bag and when I find something that will work I will post info on it. My bag needs to carry the 4760 plus my optical mouse, game pad, and game case along with the charger and the power cord.

Bib: Buy several bibs or carry some paper towels or tissues. Because when you whip out this baby those who see it start drooling and their tongues fall out of their mouths.

Wireless LAN card: DO NOT buy this laptop without this option. Even if you don't have a wireless router, get the wireless LAN card. I do have a wireless router and was using a Linksys WPC11 wireless LAN card with my Linksys wireless router. Dropped connections to the router, loss of internet connection and the varying signal strengts were too much to bear. I got the wireless LAN card and installed it myself last night. Take my word for it, buy the LAN card from Sager and have them install it. I had little trouble in installing the LAN card, but the card from Sager came with NO instructions on how to connect it. So be warned. If you are comfortable in installing parts in PC's then go for it. If anyone aks I will post pictures on how to install the LAN module.

Built In Video Camera: No complaints but I wish it had more utilites outside of the driver and camera viewer. HINT HINT HINT think Logitec video cameras utility package Sager. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean?

Bluetooth Module: Another item that I didn't get from Sager when I got my 4760. I got it and installed it last night as well. Again if any one wants pictures on the install, let me know and I will post them.

The install of this card was a little bit hairy as the card did not fit flush until you started to screw down on the card. This was a true Maalox moment. I know that the options for now with Bluetooth is limited, but I plan to get a Palm Pilot in the next few months so the ability to sync it with the 4760 is a plus. I keep making and loosing day planners like MAD so a Palm Pilot is gonna be the hot setup for me.

System RAM: My 4760 came with the 512meg of system RAM. If you can afford it go for the 1028meg of system RAM. For me system RAM is more important than video RAM.

Hyper threading: I have had it enabled since day One of ownership and have had NO problems in its use. I feel that the hyperthreading gives an edge in performance.

Sound: The 4 speakers with the subwoofer are DOPE! I have played my DVD's using just the built in speakers and the sound is clear and loud. I don't think that I will need external speakers, but on this time will tell.

Video RAM: I have NO complaints about the ATI Radeon card and the 64meg of video memory. For the gameplay that I have been doing the amount of video memory is more than adequate. Same for video playback. 128meg would be nice but 64meg for me is cool.

Overall Mission of Unit: This machine is a mobile entertainment platform and desktop replacement. I needed a machine that can play my games and DVD's while I am out of the country. I also need a machine that will run all of my business appplications. I also needed the biggest screen that I could find. I did not need a pure desktop replacement or server replacement. I have used laptops with a 14" and 15" screen and they do not cut the mustard for me. The 16" screen would have been nice, but this 17" screen is Da bomb. I'm not doing graphic intensive apps or any type of design programs. Since I have a clear mission of what I need, the 4760 was the best tool/toy for the job. A clear mission purpose of what you need your machine/toy to do will narrow down your selection.

Upgradeability: This is what drew me to the Sager/Clevo family of laptops. This is an option that NONE of the "big boys" offer on their so called laptops. This goes in Spades for Sony. What rhymes with Sony? Phoney. Baloney. Stinks like a dead pony.

Each Sager/Clevo has its own mission statement and its pros and cons. While I have become a willing member of the collective, I have kept these pros and cons in mind long before I chose the 4760. For me and what I need this machine/toy was the best fit.

So far I have not had any of the setup problems that I have seen other users of the 4760 post. I guess I got the one that the factory made on a Monday and not a Friday.

This is just my opinion, I could be wrong.................

Uhhhh...isn't HT only beneficial if you use software that is programed to take advantage of a dual CPU-type setup (i.e. Photoshop, Maya, 3dsmax, etc.)

I have noticed a general speed increase in my business apps with the hyperthreading enabled as opposed to it being turned off. I'm not working with any design apps so I can't weigh in on that.

Perhaps someone else out there can weigh in on this.

HT makes no difference at all unless the app is programmed to use it.

I use Photoshop 7.01 daily & it certainly makes a noticeable difference in that use.

No, your wouldnt notice any speed ups in PS7. Because HT doesnt make your system have act like multiple CPUs (though, windows sees it like that).

The whole purpose of HT, is to run MULTIPLE threads at the same time. HT works very well for mutli-tasking. Assuming you have the ram, you can run multiple threads and notice no performance loss (up to a point of course).

And BTW, there is no way (that i know of) to program for HT.....

Bluetooth on the 4670

pcbunker,

Glad to hear you like your 4670, my 4670 should be here by the end of the week. About the Bluetooth you installed. Where did you get the part and how much? Since I only placed my order on Thursday, I might try to call and get it installed before I get it. If not I will put it in myself. Can you post some pics

I wonder if a Nokia 3600 cell phone and the Microsoft Bluetooth mouse will work on this system using Bluetooth.

I have a Linksys wireless net card on hp Omnibook900 and the MS Bluetooth mouse would freeze every few minutes for a few seconds at a time.

I got the part direct from Sager. I have a reseller license so I got the part at dealer sheet. Call them to see if they can install it.

I will be posting pictures later tonite, if I can get my wife off her computer....

Can't use the video cam on the laptop to do the pics.

First upload your pictures to angelfire.com and then link them to the forums...
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Angelfire not let u link pictures like that?
I made a post about how to upload and display a picture in the forums. Here it is. It's pretty simple though. You should be able to figure it out.

My bad...was a lame attempt at humor.....

"Sorry about that 99!"

If you go to my post on the bluetooth module, you will see why I made that comment. Instead of using webcams for these detailed photos, I need to spend some money and buy a REAL digital camera.

Hope this helps
