Is there a way to control your desktop from your laptop? It seems like something that would be possible, but I'm not sure. is there a way to do this?

Well Windows XP has a remote desktop feature, or you could use some VNC software (its free and works well): http://www.realvnc.com

ok cool, so I can even use it in another city.

is there a big security risk involved?

you sure can...well the remote programs require a username/password and such...I would think its pretty secure...

1) GOTOMYPC.COM
2) PCANYWHERE
3) VNC (free)
4) NETMEETING (not recommended)

VNC mentioned above is free, but you can't do file transfer between computer with it. The fresh rate is a bit slower than other brand

PCANYWHERE cost money, but has features such as allowing you to file transfer and better security.

i VNC to my home computer everyday, its cool! i can tell it to do boring things while im at work like encode DVD's, defragment, monitor bittorrent downloads etc.

i can actually VNC to my home computer using my pda as well, its really slow on the pda though since i have a dualmonitor setup

Haven't tried, but I believe it is similar to their Terminal Server application. A scale down version that is.

I seems to work on local network, not sure if you could access across internet.

I recommend VNC for normal usage. It is free and simple to use.

All you do is install the VNC software on your home computer. You could access it via Internet Explorer just hitting your IP address and the port number

remote desktop works great across the internet as well, just make sure that on the client (the computer you are connecting with) you tell it to share the disk drives so you can transfer files between them...you will probably want to tell the client not to transfer the background and what not so that it will run smoothly...the only computer that needs to be running XP Pro is the one you want to connect to, you can download a client version for free from microsoft for all different versions of windows to connect with...

I guess you need XP Pro for this? Is it possible to do this via XP Home?

That's why I got UltraVNC as opposed to other free VNCs. Not only does it have a file transfer client built-in (although crude but simple), it by-passes windows file sharing security so you don't have to deal with window's file-protection.

XP Home has a client, but it cannot act as a server...remote desktop only lets you connect to machines running XP Pro...one of the added features

If you use Ultravnc (just a beefed up version of RealVNC you can do file transfers among other things. FREE!!

And if you just want to control the computers when there next to eachother from one keyboard I found this cool program called Multiplicity but with it you have to be able to see both monitors. NOT FREE!!

VNC is handy, but ultimately NOT secure. The password that you can set for the VNC session is encrypted, but not well. The rest of the session is clear text meaning anyone can see what you are doing (including any passwords that you are entering). While it is considered acceptable when on the same network, VNC is not a great idea for use over the internet.

If you want to use a program over the internet, Radmin is terrific and pretty cheap. Visit www.radmin.com to check it out.

Yes, I have to also mention that I use it over a phone line.

If you worried about privacy you could use a SSH shell and encrypt anything you want. Couldn't you? I don't have much experience with it? Anyone with a little more knowledge willing to comment?

I'd probably use it through the internet. So www.radmin.com is nice and secure?

I've never had experience with Radmin because its not free but from what i've read it should work. But if you dont' want to spend the money im pretty sure just using UltraVNC through a secure shell would be just as secure and FREE which is always a plus for me (the poor college student )
