I just wanted to share my Toshiba experiance with all.
I bought a Toshiba M35x-S161 in late January (05) and was perfectly happy with it for 3 weeks. That is when the picture suddenly went very dark (no drops or trauma) . All my attempts at brightening it where fruitless. After striking out with Office Depot extended warranty (sold a false return policy) I called Toshiba's customer service. The man on the other side walked me through rebooting, removing the battery, and other tricks with out change. He advised me to take it to a local contracted shop for repairs.
So after owning the unit for 3 weeks, I was enroute to a repair shop an hour away from home. I figured it was probably a minor problem since it works great hooked up to a remote monitor.
After 2 weeks in the shop I called to check the status. I was advised the "LED Module" was bad and is on "back order" She added there are several of that model on the shelf waiting for the same part. I called Toshiba again and was forwarded to Customer Relations" who said the parts had been held up due to a natural disaster but were to be shipped tomorrow.
After 2 more weeks I again called the shop who say the part still has not arrived. Toshiba again forwarded me to Customer relations who sounded concerned. She said she understands why I may be a little upset. She will check the status of the part and call back with in 2 hours. I asked about the 1 month warranty I have missed out on and would that be extended, We will address that when I call back she answered.
I sat by the phone all afternoon with out a call back. I am a few days away from 5 weeks in the shop and still no idea when I will have a laptop. Ok done venting now.
