@sonic, how did the pro tech get the LCD bezel off? Fingers or tool?

I know it's stupid, but I wasn't watching when he did it. He did seem like he was being rougher than I would have been, but then again, he does stuff like this all day everyday. Funny, he did not even remove the quicksnap cover at all and had a little trouble snapping the lcd case back on because of it. Now that I think about it, I think I did see him pull it apart with his hands. Also, I noticed he did not snap back on all the way that piece of plastic at the base of the LCD that goes on behind the keyboard. But I pushed it down and it snapped on. When he first took off the screen, the wireless antenna wire was still connected and he wasn't sure how to get it off, but he remembered in about the same time it took me to look it up on the Dell site.

hi, i'm new to these forums...

how does one go about getting a "replacement" samsung lcd
post #244 of 379
Let me beat others to it, so I can put it in a nicer way. Your best bet is to scan through the first 16 pages of this post. Not only will you find out how to get the replacement, but you'll find everything you ever wanted to know about how, when, why and whether you should replace your LG screen.

That's 20x more annoying then sparkles could ever be.

And i would go as far to say yes, the samsung is slightly less sparkley, but it's their. And it's more noticable to anyone with sensative eyes because it's patterned. Every few minutes i felt like I was looking at one of those posters you stare at for 10 minutes and then an image appears through the patterns. LOL

As for the brightness and viewing angles, the manufacture specs even say the LG is better in both those regards.
I just installed the Samsung today and don't notice any of the problems you have with yours. Don't assume just because your one unit was bad that they are all bad. Mine is near perfect. I've worked on the Sony A190 and A290 and would say it is very comparable. Just a little less bright. The LG I had would give me a headache after 15 minutes of use.

That was definitely the hardest part. I just used my fingers. Once it starts to come loose, its easy. It was just tough getting it off the corner when you do something like this the first time. It probably took 45 minutes to do the entire job, but if I had to do it again, it would probably only be 15 minutes.

Well multiple other people have reported they still see sparklies with the samsung, check through the other posts. Other people have said they see paternized lcd sparkley pixels. Others have said they have worse light leak. And the other guy was amazed that i saw that techno- 80's looking LCD pattern in the corner that he has on his, and that was just a few pages back on this post. And this would give me a bigger headach then any amount of sparkles could ever do.

A lot of people are suffering from these, not just my one unit. And some of it is factual, if you go to the LG and Samsung web page and check out the specs for each model number, the LG *is* brighter and the LG *does* have better viewing angles.

Like some said, perhaps quality control is a bit off. Maybe they have multiple manufacturing sites for the LCDs so they are slightly diff... or bad quality control guy working some days... lol. Never know.

I did my replacement kit today. Yeah, the hardest thing is to remove the LCD bezel. The srevice manual asks you to start from the lower right corner. However, since all tabs are snapped in, how could you just move one corner down and right to release those 2 tabs. After failing several times, I pull the center part of bottom and top bezel up and release some tabs. And use a small screw driver (cover with cloth) to pry and release the tabs one by one to the corner. Once you can release one corner. The bezel is easy to pull off now.
It's not a difficult job. However, the right tools will be big help and you need to be very careful. I don't think I finish the entire replacement in 15 min. next time. There are more than 20 screws.
Here is my observations on Samsung vs. LG screen:

Sparkle effect:
Samsung screen still has the sparkle effect, but much less pronounced than LG's. White is a bit grey, but not the dusty look on LG. It's quite similar to my returned i8600's Samsung screen. It doesn't cause the eye strain like LG does.

Light leakage:
My LG has leakages everywhere. You can even notice leakage on a white background. However, the Samsung has leakage on the bottom edge only. But it's quite thick. It's probably 3/4" to 1" on the center and decrease to both corners. But I can only notice the leakage on the very dark background.

Color:
The default color is not as good as LG. It looks pale. I compare the screen with some color charts. The blue looks ok. The red is a bit dark and not vivid. And the yellow is kinda "earth tone yellow". However, after I adjusted the gamma correction and digital vibrance, The Samsung is probably shoulder-to-shoulder with LG. But definitely not close to Sony XBrite. (I did not have a Sony to compare side by side. Just from my memory). Oh, BTW, the color seems look better in the artificial light than in the natural light.

Other things such as brightness and view angle, I can tell the difference between them.

I'll definitely keep this Samsung. The only downside is the leakage. It's quite big actually. If I didn't see my LG, I'll return this Samsung in a heart beat. But, now if it will distract me watching the DVD. I will keep it. It just too many hassles to ask Dell to send me another kit.

BTW, I took some pictures and tried to show the sparkle effect. Unfortunately, I didn't catch it good. But if some one is interested, you can check on the following links:

no doubt it's probably one poor guy running the assembly line... he's got one glass eye and wearing a patch over the other one

BigHug, did you also noticed any difference in "sparkles" with both screens between artificial light vs. natural light?

I wonder how much a factor different lighting may affect everyone's opinion.

Can't remember on LG. Will try on Samsung tomorrow. Oh! When the sun come up.

Yah that light leak on the bottom of the samsung is huge. You can even see it on your green screen hehe! That's how my samsung was too =( Nasty stuff i tell u.

My concerns in order:

No Dead pixels > No light leak > Brightness > No Retro LCD corners > No Sparkles
post #255 of 379
I notice noone has mentioned having dead pixels. Dell really does a good job with that. I always see a few dead pixel complaints with Sagers and Alienware, and they sell a whole lot less computers.
Yah i'm surprised about that too sonic. Dead pixels were my main concern when I was thinking about ordering... who know these other trivial issues would exhist lol.

I think you jinxed us. I just heard the Reaver's replacement came with 2 dead pixels!
My exchanged 9300 has a dead/stuck pixel just right of center. BRIGHT GREEN. It also has a lot of light leakage.
I think my next step is for the screen kit.
