partitions!

Thread Starter
I have Inspiron 9100 with 60Mb HD.
I want to make a new partition (using PartitionMagic 8.0) but I have already 5 of them:-\:
1)DELLUTILITY - FAT 86.3Mb
2)Local Disk(C) -NTFS 54,313.5Mb
3) (*) - Unallocated 7.8Mb
4) Local Disk(*) - CP/M, Concurent DOS, CTOS 2,816.1Mb
5) (*) - Unallocated 7.8Mb
It looks like no 4 is a sort of Ghost image...
What should I do with them (move, resize or merge?) to get a logical partition because right now I can't just create a new one???

I'm not sure what the 4th partition is, i have no experience with Dells. But if you havent used up all the space in your C: Partition and don't mind taking away some of it you can resize your C: Partition to make room for another.

Oops maybe my last post won't work. I just read somewhere else that you can only have 4 main partitions. So I don't know if it will let you add another. anyone know?

No 4 is the recovery image that you can use to restore your laptop to when it was factory shipped. You access it by pressing Ctrl-F11 at bootup(could be Shift-F11, but I'm pretty sure it's Ctrl). You can blow this away if you don't think you need it.

I'm not sure where you saw 4 or 5 partitions....you've only got 3.. (1) (2) (4).... unallocated space isn't a partition. Reason why you can't create a new one is because you don't have any empty space to create a new one. If you want to make a new partition, you're going to have to resize the one that's taking most of the space to clear some space(or just delete the Dell recovery partition you don't need). Once you've cleared some space, you can create partitions as needed.

The rules with partitions are you can have 4 primary partitions. One of these primary partitions can be created as a extended partition. Once you have a extended partition, you can then create as many logical partitions as needed. Note that you can only boot Windows OS's off a primary partition(may not be true anymore, but it was the case a few years back). Linux can boot off logical partitions.

Anyway you can create a new version of system restore? lol
