upgrade s360 dvd to dvd+-rw?

Is this possible? After thinking about it, the only thing I don't really like about the s360 is that i'm stuck with just a dvd reader/cdwriter. Is it possible in the future to swap for a dvd writer or is that going to be a waste?

Problem is trying to find a DVD writer to fit in the chasis. It takes a 9.5mm height drive not the standard 12.5mm drives. Only place I have found it is from Sony and they are charging $400.

In a couple of months I will probably buy an external dvd writer either which is bus powered. Freecom sells one that is pretty reasonable

Ah, i figured that, haha. I have a dvd burner that i'll put into a USB 2.0 external case to use then. Don't normally need to burn DVD's on the go anyway .

Has anybody checked on the pricing for the replacement dvd burner? I really should get one for work, but $400... Sony is raping their customers.

i got the external 710 ul/t for sale at best buy for $99 after rebate in may- some are still out there online and the rebate is good till sept. i think- plus it has much faster speeds than the internal sony offers

it is the Matsushita UJ-822 that fits in the S360, I talked to a guy at www.talkvaio.com who did it and he says that it works beautifully, and even the bezel swaps nicely if you are careful.

There seems to only be like one guy selling these, here is a link to his sales:

What is better USB 2.0 or firewire for external burning?
well firewire is 400mb theoretical top speed, USB2 is 480mbps, but usb2 is not as good at achieving such high speeds from what I hear. Basically, despite the theoretical top speeds, Firewire is much better. It also integrates with windows a little better I think, and firewire can do nifty things like hubless (and crazy fast) networking between dozens of daisy chained computers.

But firewire is better, or just as good, depending on the burner.

This compares ide hdd performance, but it is very relevant:

both do the same when buring cuz it tops out @ 8x unless you get a 16x burner with 16x media. I noticed no diffrence between my dvd burner when i had the firewire or usb2 hooked up. both methods burned a full 4.7G dvd in about 9:00
