PLEASE HELP! What Am I Doing Wrong?

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800-4K1 that is now a few years old. Awhile ago, the DVD-Rom stopped reading CDs and some DVDs (Model SD-C2502). I was under the impression that you can switch Roms with any Rom, so I picked up an SD-R2612. I couldn't get that to work, giving me an "IDE #1 ERROR" every time I started my computer. I searched for help, but found nothing. So then I bought a SD-C2502 figuring the same drive would probably work. Wrong again, same problems. I downloaded Firmware from a site since the one I bought was slightly older than the one I originally had in my laptop. However, that did not work either when I flashed it. If anyone wants to see what came up when I flashed it in DOS, I can post a picture.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong and how I can get one of these drives to work so I can use CDs again and reformat? Thank you for any help at all.

your drive that you bought is set as a Cable Select instead of a Master or Slave. Sometimes firmware can fix that but not always. Do the following at your own risk - if you jumper (read solder and leave a small piece of metal) between pin 45 and 47 (they are right next to each other) it should trigger your drive to Master mode.

Where can I find more details on how to do this? Or better yet, find a place to buy a drive that won't need that done and isn't much more than around $75?

looked around - try this thread http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread1615.html

should have pics at that end of it.

Finding a drive is the hard part, the people you buy it from have to tell you wether it is a CS (cable select) or a Master before you buy it. If you can find the right firmware you might be able make it a Master by updating that. There is also a link to that in this thread, however on one drive I tried it on it did not work. Other then that find a Toshiba PASP/ASP that will sell you the exact replacement drive.

The mod took about 3 seconds to do so that should be fine.

I doubt I can do something like that so I will have to take your tips and ask those questions before purchasing another. Thanks for the help!

I have the same problem with my 5680. I replaced a bad drive with the SD-R2612. I have only one question though before I go ahead with the mod...

Does it matter that you would be setting the cd/dvd drive as the master and not as the slave?

In my mind, I don't see how that would be a problem, but then again, I'm not a professional and would only be guessing. I know that you set the boot sequence in the bios despite what the slave/master setting would be. I assume that the master/slave setting is for addressing only and doesn't affect anything else?

For some reason Toshiba machines must have their CD/DVD drives set at MASTER not Slave or Cable Select. Why?

No. The setting master/slave has nothing to do with the boot order. It has been my experience that Toshiba laptops need the drive to be set to slave only if the drive goes into a removable bay. For most machines, the drive is held with screw(s) and the drive needs to be set to master. In those cases, there is a duel-channel IDE controller. The HDD is set to master on the primary channel; the CD is master on the secondary channel

So in other words, If I go ahead jumper pins 45 and 47 on my drive, then it should boot up fine instead of locking up the computer at startup because it is taking the drive out of CS and putting it as master of the secondary channel...which my lappy requires out of a cd drive.

True

Where did boot order come into the discussion? The problem is BIOS just recognizing the drive. Much better to return the drive for one that is jumperable than to solder it and loose warranty and all possibly all usefullness.

No slim CD drives have external jumpers.

I know once as a response to one of my questions when I asked for a tehnical manual for my sat 4200 I got a link where a guy changed the CD-rom for a dvd-rom and had to interchange the weldings at two connecting pins on the mobo. It could soemthing like that to.

Some 2.5" drives are jumperable. For one, the Seagate Momentus series of notebook hard drives (carried by CompUSA and others) is jumper configured and are compatible with Toshiba notebooks. Other than that insure that the drives are "master" configured and NOT "cable select" to avoid the necessity to solder.

This post is talking about CD/DVD drives. All the HDDs have jumpers. None of the CD/DVDs do.

Thanks! I obviously forgot where I was. --LarryS
