Virus Protection for a Mac?

Just bought a iBook 500 (dual usb). Its my first Mac so I'm working on figuring it out. Any suggestions on a good Virus Scan/Protection program?

Don't need it. There are no viruses for OS X.

Norton does have a Mac version, but honestly I see no use for such a program on a Mac. Just keep it up to date, and don't download unknown programs.

Doesn't matter if you download unknown programs or not. There are simply ZERO viruses that affect the OS X operating system.

Kinda gives you the warm fuzzies, don't it?

The only virus protection you need: don't install windows on your mac (through a windows emulator and whatnot).

Except that I guess ZERO means the existance of non test case virus/trojans such as MacOS.MW2004.Trojan and SH.Renepo.B. Sure, OS X has nearly zero viruses, but they do exist. While the system overall is more secure then Windows, common sense is still needed. As the platform becomes more popular, expect more trojans to appear, waiting for people to mistakenly download just the wrong application or e-mail. I'm not trying to scare anyone, but saying there are no viruses for the Mac OS X platform is wrong, and puts people into a false sense of security.

My advice is never install Norton Antivirus. It is MESSED UP. If you don't know any better, you might think Norton is the virus.

That is pretty reasonable I think. But I'd nock on some wood, you can never say never!

....antiviruses are for p*ssies....and people who have as much common sence as a chicken

My old mac had Symantec antivirus. I think that was bought by Norton, the last definition on that computer was in 97. Not much help but it could get you a place to start.

i concur with teh above.. no real reason to install it.. well except to stop passing on virri thru email to windows friends.. that come to you first.

i'd skip it.. and i would CERTAINLY skip norton. Their OS X products are JUNK.

i decided to play it safe and got this, but it may not be necessary. if the rebates actually show up it'll only cost $16.03. expires 3/26. no returns here.

Pretty much the only slightly useful part of that product will be the antivirus software. OS X has a built in firewall, and odds are the Norton one will simply slow things down, if not cause system instability.

You just wasted 16 bucks gangster...well, 80 if you don't put in the rebate forms on time.

I use a Mac OSX port of the open source virus scanner, clamAV. You can check it out at http://www.markallan.co.uk/clamXav/index.php

But like others have said, there's not much of a problem on OSX. I've been scanning for a while and I've only ever seen virii in an email inbox file which had emails sent from Windows users (mostly).
