Just ordered the iXPS2!! YAY!!!

Hello forum people!

I wanted to share my info with all of you...first of all, thanks to what I read here on the forums over the past couple days, I just ordered my XPS2 laptop. I was deciding between an AW area51-m 7700 or the Dell iXPS2. All of the comments on these boards helped me make the decision.

I am an owner of 2 Alienware desktops. The first one (3+ years old) has always performed flawlessly...just loud fans. The second one I purchased exactly 1 year ago today. From the first day, there were problems with it. I spent several hours talking with AW's support staff on the problems, and they eventually took it back and replaced the motherboard and memory. Since I got it back (about 6 weeks later) it has always performed well, but the questionable support service left a bitter taste in my mouth...

My wife, my daughter and I all play DOAC and WoW. In addition, I have gotten my sister, my brother in law and my brother all hooked on Camelot too. Since they are about 2 hours away, we all conference call together on the nights we play, and have a blast. For the weekends that we travel to see them, it meant either not playing, or luggin both HUGE Alienwares to our destination to play together, which we did once and was a PAIN! So, we decided to get a laptop...that way we could bring that down and maybe one AW (much easier to pack 1 ) (Just a side note, my sister and brother in law each have a Dell XPS Gen 4 Gaming desktop that they use, and they LOVE their DELLS!!! )

When researching on this site, I was amazed that even on the AW forums, the ratio of compaints for AW over Dell was about 15:1. Customer service is very important to me, so seeing all the positive comments about Dells service, vs the negative (and sometimes NASTY) ones for AW is the main reason I decided to go with the DELL, and I am very excited about my decision!!!

One question that maybe some people can help me with...I ordered the 80 gig standard HD...is there much of a difference going with the 60 gig 7200 HD? Is that speed difference going to really effect my playing? If so, maybe I can change my order...just wish they had an 80 gig 7200 instead of just the 60.

I look forward to contributing to the forums, and again, thanks so much great info to read through, and the interesting opinions. One other thing I noticed is how much AW posters seem to be nastier than the Dell ones. Make no mistake, I love my AWs that I have, but the repuation of AW has degraded considerably from when I made my first purchase, and my own experience with them helped make my decision a lot easier!

Cant WAIT for April 19th!!! (Estimated ship date)

Welcome to the Dell forums. You will no doubt get sucked into the fun XPS 2 game of "has my order moved yet?"

In reality and everyday normal use you will not notice the difference between the 5400 and 7200 rpm hd. I do video editing on a older machine sometimes still with 4200rpm hds and have np's. Their are slight advantages, yes but mainly for the synthetic benchmark junkies.

I would argue that you could see the difference. 7200 RPM drives simply load data faster. So that translates to any time you see a load screen in a game, or any time you're using large files. So, for WoW, the loading screen will go quicker, and for video editing, it will load up those massive video files quicker.

At best, a 7200 RPM could load a huge file maybe 30-45 seconds faster. During a game, after the loading screen, it won't make the slightest difference-- the hard drive won't be used until the next loading screen. So if you'd rather have another 20GB of storage at the cost of UP TO 30 seconds of your life per loading screen, then stay with the 80gb.

Maybe you should have waited to see what type of LCDs the iXPS2s are shipping with first. It should be soon that we find out right?

Yeah we should know in about 2 weeks.
