Desktop freeze problem

Thread Starter
I've got a problem on my (actually my roomate's) desktop. It will totally freeze up if

1.) I use the Java plugin at all. I tried removing and reinstalling it, but it still freezes.

2.) I run Virus Scan (it will get anywhere from 1100 files up to 24000 files scanned before it freezes, and does not detect any viruses in that time) I have the latest software

3.) random freezes happen for no apparent reason. Do I have a virus that's attacking my Antivirus program? Is the memory bad? Does anyone have a good idea what's going wrong???

Please help. Thanks. -Djembe Rob

do you have a good spyware removal program on that pc? spyware if there is alot can do strange stuff like that. just a thought.

very weird,

it could possibly be a disc failure, after it freezes do you hear a clicking sound in your hard drive?

VirusScan also checks for spyware. No clicking sound. Tried to uninstall XP service Pack 2, and it froze 1/2 way through. Not sure what that will do.

which virus scan are you using? not to harp but no one program finds all spyware. most people use spybot search and destroy or adaware se. both can be downloaded for free. i use both programs i mentioned also using microsoft beta spyware removal program.

okay, spyware issue is now moot. since it froze while deleting SP2, now every time I turn on the computer, it goes into an endless boot cycle, and it doesn't want to boot from the recovery CD. Grrrr...

make sure you have the bios set to boot from the optical drive, sometimes they're not...

yeah, I'm trying to remember which key to hold so it gets me into BIOS. thanks, plageclochard.

I would suggest to start fresh, and reformat...Heck thats what we told everyone to do when I work Tech support...heh, No seriously starting out fresh usually is the thing to do in situations like that

yeah, I know, but my roomates both have stuff on the computer that they don't want to lose, so we do what we can. I probably will have to reformat, though. thanks for the advice.
