Wireless question for a 4yr old G4 Ti Powerbook...

I know very little about Apple Notebooks or the OS. I have a co-worker with a 4yr old Powerbook, he wants to go wireless, Apple told him he needs some Airtouch card they no longer carry and to go try Ebay!

My question, isn't it like any PC laptop? Doesn't it have a PC Card slot and you can use any Wireless 802.11 b/g Card? Or it Apple sticking you in that aspect?

Thanks!

no they have a proprietary internal car called an airport card. Apple discontinued manufacturing them..

The best bet is sng one on ebay. As a secondary option he can purrchase a pc card and hack it to make it work.. but that will require some directions and knowledge.. he will also have to use the pc card slot... which means something sticking out.. but on the other hand reception is better that way.

does the powerbook have a mini pci card slot ?

if so you can get a regular wifi card.

The Titanium Powerbook uses the old 802.11B Airport card, $78 here. It fits into a PCMCIA like (but not true PCMCIA) slot under the keyboard, and will attach to the antennas built into the computer case. The bad thing about the Titaniums is that the antennas are not in the screen like most systems but instead near the front right and left parts of the case.

The Titanium Powerbook does have one PCMCIA slot that can be used with a non Airport card. Look on This List for cards that will work with the OS X driver off that site. If the system is running OS 9, there are some drivers for that as well elsewhere, but you may need a specific card as well.

The advantage of the Airport card is the native OS X wireless support will just work. The PCMCIA method will not be quite as integrated (trips to the system preferences instead of the Airport icon on the menu bar), but still functional.
