I literally can't find anything on these boards about the Aopen 1849. Anyone have one of these or at least hands-on experience with it?

Well...I generally don't like to buy something that I have no one else's opinion on. And I would much prefer to buy it north of 49. The only place I can find it requires a 15% restocking fee. At ~$1600 CAD, I would loose $240 CAD!

Erk - make that 24% -> ~$400

I don't see anything @ IBuyPower that resembles this model.

They are kind of bulky and pretty hard to assemble compared to the 1557GLS. A bit on the thick side but otherwise pretty nice. Ask if you what to know something.

Ooh! Everything
  • What do you mean by "hard to assemble"...as in, what components are tricky to get at? (ie.: HDD, CPU, RAM, Optical)
  • Hows the build quality? Any flex or noticable torsion of plastic?
  • How sturdy is the LCD?
  • How's the keyboard? Any flex?

Sorry for bombarding you with questions. I've been searching for a review on this laptop, and it doesn't exist anywhere

Thanks

(PS.: some pictures would be nice, preferably of the bottom of the laptop so I know where the components are)

Well it's was kindy tricky to get the plastic part above the keyboard of( it is screwed in place with 4 screws). The cooler for the processor is removed with use of some force. Didn't find a wlan slot, don't know if it has one. Some flex above the keyboard. Screen nice and robust.

No pictures though. Built it at work.

Is this just for removing the CPU?

That's OK. A PCMCIA or USB Wi-Fi adapter is fine by me. How easy is to remove/upgrade the RAM/HDD?

Any notebook in particular you'd compare it to?

Good

Oh, OK.

Build quality about the same as tthe 1557GLS. If i remember correctly one of the rams and the cpu is under the keyboard. the other ram is under the laptop and the hdd is behind the battery( kind of tricky to find, you need to remove the battery, then there is a small space behind it).

Well, it would be nice if I knew what that laptop's build quality was too

Um...can you compare it to an HP or Gateway something you'd normally find in BestBuy or something?

That would be OK. They aren't frequently upgraded components anyway. The hard drive is something I'd be swapping regularly for backups.

Hmmm...interesting. I wonder if it is some kind of a safety feature? Technically, the battery should be removed before removing the hard drive anyway.
