Simple Undervolting Tutorial - Pentium M Dothan - Page 37

oh, if it runs for a while ok, then i like to run some regular stuff... just do your normal stuff, just nothin' that you'd hate to lose data if if crashes... that's the best testing i know of...

Outlook, Word, IE and FF browsers, etc.

i meant WHILE i'm still running Prime95... sorry...
Well, my system as in sig is running as follows:

default max: 1.356v
default min: 0.988

Modified max: 1.100
Modified min: 0.764

It dropped my idle temps by maybe 2C. Not very much

However, my load temperatures dropped from 56-57C to around 48C. Playing World of Warcraft at 1920x1200 maxed out details never takes my CPU above 45C! I alt-tab at various times to check. Super!

Congrats! I didn't get my temps dropped too much, but I'm far more pleased with 52 degrees while surfing and no spikes up to 70+ than 58 and occasional spikes up there.

I dropped my minimal to 0.700V... it ran for nearly 18 hours without a glitch, so I'll assume it's stable.

I haven't tested 1.212V yet -- I get Prime95 to run for 1.5 hours on 1.196V, so hope 1.212 will be better.
Now at min 0.716v and max 0.956v!

what are average undervolts for a PMobile 735 1.7 Ghz oc'd to 2.26Ghz? I had to raise my volts to 1.292 cause I got an error at 1.276 volts . Anyone have any voltages on an overclocked PMobile? It seems like i should be able to do better.

Intel CPU Datasheets

After reading thru this thread i got interested in what voltages intel uses in its docunetation. so i looked thru intels site and came up with 2 documents.
7x5 CPUs
7x0 CPUs
they list the voltages, current, and many other such specs.

Just wondering if this is normal that even when undervolting my PM load temps hover around 50-60c? I remember my northwood desktop CPU hovering around this. It looks like most of you have temps like this. I thought the PM were supposed to be much cooler? I'm guessing its not hurting the CPU any I was just wondering if there was anyway to keep them below 50?

whoa, missed alot over my vacation, to reply:

ivar, no worries man, sorry if I came on strong, it's just the way I write. I'm just as interested in ULV testing to see if it's a gimmick, but I don't think we could get intel to send over a few chips for review .

For many of the others, make sure that you are reading the directions originally posted and the v.1.6 update posted by me. Also use the readme, which contains much info too. William, the CPU reads 100% because it's always run at 100% in windows (if no task is running, then the system idle processes use it), however, what we call "CPU load" is actally OS load on the CPU. When you run a program that demands CPU time, this is what we see. Read the directions again and I think you'll be set.

Voltage goes above the max I set

I am using CHC to set min and max voltages for my Sony S480 (so far 0.7V at 6x and 0.908 at 13x for min and max are pretty stable). The laptop is still running hot (52-55 deg) on AC, and I noticed that the voltage not infrequently jumps above the max that I set, to as high as 1.385V. I tried setting values in between the min & max as well, thinking that maybe the interpolation was messed up, but this hasn't helped at all. Anyone else see their voltages jump above the max?
Never, that's odd. What are you using to read the voltages and how long do the voltages stay at their peak (or even past it, as you say ).

Also, many laptops have a function to turn off their fans it the processor isn't putting out alot of heat. This may be the case with your sony, which, when the fans are off, renders you using passive cooling on your laptop. Those temps are fantastic for that if this is the case. If you want to keep the fans on, try using a fan control program.

voltage spikes despite CHC

I'm reading the voltage spikes off CHC itself. The fan is still on, albeit at a low level, & doesn't bother me.

those are some of the highest temps i've seen... my CPU hangs in the low 30's when just doing browsing, Outlook, etc. and only sometimes gets into the upper 30's and my GPU hangs in the upper 40's to low 50's... these are the same that most people have posted...

i'm using RMClock and I9KFanGUI not CHC, and i have an M770/2.13, so that could make a difference, but not that much...

i'd use some other apps to see if maybe your readings are incorrect... good luck

Damn, I've never opened a sony so I don't know what kind of cooling solution they have. I'm with Dozzit, I use CHC and my idle temp is usually room temp (28C atm) and my load is about 43-44C. If your fans are still running, that is hot. I would open it up and have a look-see at the cooling solution, but that's just me as I'm tech/system builder. What are your idle temps without CHC or any voltage control?

yeah, i can't imagine them any warmer... it could be a sensor prob or something else weird like that... but those are awfully high temps...
I'm overclocking my Pmobile 1.7Ghz right now to 2.26Ghz. I have it running on .7V on battery and my temp right now browsing the internet is 47C. Is that kind of warm or does that sound about right? On AC power and running Prime95, my temp hovers around 74C. Is that about normal also?
You guys are lucky! My temps hit 70 before undervolting; now they are at 52/53 if I'm using the full gammit of Word, Firefox, and Gaim. This is after calling Dell and getting a new heat sink and 755 proc.
I've been reading the forums and tried doing a search and I've been using CHC, but I'm getting little to no temperature drops. I'm running at 54 C with Firefox, Winamp, and AIM open. I think it's a little hot since I read people getting low 30s and 40s. Is CHC just bogus?
My settings for my 1.8 P-M is..
Multiplier:
6 - .716
12 - .972
16 - 1.068
18 - 1.148

I'm not too sure what Im doing and Im getting no help in the Dell forums for my 700m.
Hmm... damn. CHC is pretty simple, just select the voltage, have the program test it, and you're done. Are you guys sure you're hitting apply and then little the program test the new voltage? CHC works great on my end.

I finally finished assembling my MS-1032, After the reading this forum thread 3x, I undervolted the CPU using RMclock and torture testing was done via Prime95 I got the Pentium M down to 1.1v.

max: 1.1 - 15x
min: 0.700/0.988 - 6x

I got everthing running stable at 1.1 it is rock solid after 9 hours of Prime95 torture testing. Finishing up the 0.988 torture test

This forum is the best...
