Unix has command line tools to adjust process priority. Man -k for nice. That said, if the game has lots of processes running, it could be a chore to find the right ones to bump up, and its usually best for the kernel to handle scheduling and priority. I game just fine using winex/cedega on Linux, which maps directx calls to native openGL. Linux Nvidia drivers are very very good.

The fact is that Apple's video drivers are not nearly as fast or optimized as the PC versions. OSX is limited to OpenGL when most game developers are putting all of their effort into DirectX. And finally, Apple's market share means that a horrible, low selling dog of a game will sell more copies that a overwhelming hit on the Apple platform.

The solution? Maybe future Cell Processors will be so fast that Everyone moves to them including Microsoft, forcing graphics adapters, game developers and others to optimize and write to the new platform. Or move to x86 and release winex for OSX.

Were you honestly hoping for a game selection for Apple's? I would only get an apple if I was anti-game

Apple's have thier niche market for
a) People who do not game
b) People who are interested in simple and efficient computing
c) Graphics Professionals
c) People with a desire to pay for quality over quantity...

With my last statement I don't mean to start a flame ware Apple Vs. PC , however, in keeping true to the phrase "You get what you pay for." Apple pulls through with nice products, and sure they may be behind the curve while trying to keep up with PCs, but I have yet to see a PC as well built, and well "designed" (meaning both asthetically and technologically) as the Apple Computers.

Although I am a PC kind of guy, I would not argue with your second c statement ( ). Part of the reason that Apple puts out quality stuff is because Apple does not let just anyone develop for them. Not to mention Apple is the only company that makes Macs. That certainly is not helping cost.

But it you look at other types of software besides games, there is a Mac port of pretty much every major Application. eg: Macromedia, Adobe, Office, etc, etc, etc.

i'd also make the point that gaming needs vary along a spectrum, and as such, some ppl who prefer Macs as a platform and who like to game will do so in accordance to their needs. (for example, i got an iBook bc it has discrete graphics, but nothing to call home about. they enhance, the OS and various multimedia apps moreso than what i'd get on an integrated chipset...and it can do some basic games. i don't need more for gaming on my notebook cuz that's what i have a desktop for, and yes it happens to be a windows machine. if however i had an interest in a gaming rig and had $3k+ to blow i'd be eyeballing PowerMac systems along w/ all varieties of high end PC hardware. to say that ppl who r serious about gaming won't use Macs, IMO, is ignorant. it's like someone who has never played on a powerbook (PB) making the statement that Macs, and hence PBs, can't play a certain game by virtue of the platform as a whole. meanwhile the person who actually owns and plays on the PB kindly replies w/ an "<ahem> i play that game quite nicely on my PB."

No, Macs do not game as well as their PC counterparts. Yes, Macs can game along a spectrum w/ desktops allowing for greater flexibility due to the interchangeable graphics cards.

And for the record, there's not a game on PC that i'd WANT to play on a Mac and can't.

Didn't have time to read this entire thread, but it goes like this:

User Base Apple and their operating system, have a very small user base. Obviously Window$ has a different situation. As a result, Apple and their OS get little to no support. Ironically, Apple's OS is used for game development (i.e. Doom3 / etc)

ohh yeah I didnt want to start a flame war either, I know the Pros of Apples, and if I wasn't such a gamer I would probably get one myself. But I need games!

me too. Apples are nice computers/notebook, but gaming is slightly more important. Maybe I'll get one for the wife?

Hmmm..... Utilize the strengths of the G5's, and port games to the PC and Apple too. Sounds like a win win to me.
yea, go get a dual g5 2.7ghz and then go get an AMD fx-[what ever the best one out is] and compare them in doing what macs were meant to do (photoshop, final cut pro, etc) and see which is faster and better. oh and btw, the power mac has the 6880 which is a pretty good card. and who the f*ck buys a mac to game on?!? you must be a tard to consider apple for games. its like driving a ferrari 20mph below the speedlimit IMHO.
Running games on a computer is often more taxing than doing video or 3d rendering.

Buying a PowerMac just for Word and Internet is driving a Ferrari at 20 mph, but playing games on a PowerMac is like trying to drive it at 200 mph but having a governor stop you from going past 120.

Hopefully the governor (OS X itself) will be modified in the future to allow games to play better.

so, if "Macs suck for gaming" and the new xbox uses 3 G5 tweaked processors, whose OS and games were developed on dual G5 Macs, whats to keep someone from making an xbox out of their Powermac? now that would be interesting, and there'd be quite a few PC fanboys eating crow bigtime.

also, anyone have the specs for the Apple G5 vs. the xbox G5? pipelines, threads, cache, etc... I've seen the xbox stuff, but don't know that i've seen similar specs for the Macs.

EDIT: heheh...read below...

ZDnet

And the clips... compliments of www.ign.com

Call of Duty

Gears of War

Madden '06

Ghost Recon

Quake 4

man, if a hack is released that can mod (well duh, the developer kit would be a nice start ) a dual Powermac i'll be pinching pennies hardcore.
