Alienware 7700 Configurations

I have noticed that a lot of people on here have used the Nvidia card in their configurations, I've yet to see anyone else use the ATI card in the configurations.

The Nvidia slightly edges past the x800 in performance.

I went with the X800 in my order.

i think a part of it is the lack of internal wireless on the 7700 if you use the x800...the online configurator will not let you select it, it says there is a conflit. personally i think this could be a part of the problem since alot of people prefer to no have an external wireless card despite their better performance.

Good I'm not the only one then, I love ATI I hate that I couldn't use the internal Wireless card, but since I wouldn't have been using the PCMIA slot anyhow, this kinda worked out just okay then.

I have heard the difference between the cards is minimal. I went with the nvidia (I have an ATI card in my PC and love it btw) as i read that it runs cooler than the ATI. And in a laptop that runs hot i figured making it worse with the ATI isn't going to do me any good.

I wanted an ATI and also an internal wireless as I would hate having something stick out of the PCMCIA slot.

After the email from AW stating that the two were incompatiable, I switched to the Nvidia as I really wanted to keep the internal wireless and both cards were pretty much the same performance wise.

this might sound a little newbish but what does btw mean

btw = by the way

btw... i didn't know the nvidia's ran cooler. if i had known that, i would've chosen the nvidia, but then again, i'm guessing the heat difference, like the performance difference, is minimal. oh well.

I chose reliability versus Heat disapation and performance, but so far ATI has been good to me as far as perfomance goes...

Mine runs awesome. Gets a little warm under my left palm especialy with the wireless card but I prop up the front of it up a little and the back just a tad. Works great till I can get a notebook cooler

yeah I went ahead an purchases a vantec cooler for 30 bucks at the local bestbuy here...It plugs straight into a usb port...so I dont' have to worry about lugging around another ac adapter. 1 usb port out of my 4 is not too bad, all I'll have hooked up to it will be a mouse and an mp3 player...

So how does it work? Pretty good? Pics?

The problem with an external wireless card is it hogs the only PCMCIA slot in the chassis.

That's what I'm saying, because my local Best Buy nor any that I know of carry the Vantec Cooler. They only carry the Targus, and I can tell you from experience (and testing using fanspeed and mobometer) that the targus doesn't do squat to lower the temps.

So what makes the ATI more reliable than the iNvidia?

My experience with ATI, and Nvidia. I've had way too many NVidia card for my taste burn out on me...and they weren't the cheap agp cards, they were heafty 6600 pci-e 256 cards...that burned out on me...including one that liteally went up in flames...I have 2 ati x850 plat ed cards, that I run Heavely on my systems and I haven't had a lick of problems from em...My server is running a ATi 9800 XT 256...agp(8x) and it runs smooth at beer battered shrimp...(mmmmMMMmm shrimp)

The Vantec cooler, I've tested on my desktop, and it runs fine...I havent' received my latptop yet from AW...I'm going to call em when I get off of work.

I went with an ATI card for my 51m for a few reasons:

1. Experience- I've had a desktop with an ATI card in it for almost 4 years now, and have had no problems with it. ATI's media center software isn't so good, but the hardware is pretty dependable. Also, my beloved GameCube is also ATI-powerd, and it has stood up to quite a beating as well (getting knocked off tables, being thrown around in checked luggage, etc).

2. I'm going with external wireless for the range, so I didn't have to worry about the hardware conflicts involved with an internal card.

3. I had heard that the Nvidia cards were in short supply, and I'm so dang impatient that I went for the ATI, hoping to speed construction and delivery
