adding 2nd hard drive problems

I tried to add a 2nd HD to my 8890 today, but I could not get it to recognize it. I bought the machine with the bracket for the 2nd bay & I figured it would be nothing to add the 2nd drive.

I have an IBM 40 gig Travelstar drive that looks identical to the main HD in my Sager. I jumpered both drives as cable select, installed it in the bracket & booted it up.

It does not seem to show in the BIOS or Windows. I have Partition Magic 8.0 & it does not see it & neither does the disc management in WinXP.

I suppose the drive could be defective but I am pretty sure that it isn't. Did I miss something simple here???

Try setting the jumper to master on both, then on one/slave on other, etc.

Sounds like a jumper thing.

Did you set the RAID jumper as well?

I tried master & slave, both with no jumpers etc, etc, etc.

I didn't change the RAID jumper, I am trying to install a backup HD not a RAID setup. Do I need to change the jumper to simply install a 2nd HD??

I took the stupid drive in & out so many times trying to figure it out that I damaged that damn flexfit cable for the 2nd HD bracket, where do I get another cable??

The laptop IDE cables are usually not keyed like the desktop ones. Have you made sure you are putting it on the right way?

I kept messing up with a 3.5" <-> 2.5" IDE cable adapter that I have. Luckily, it doesn't appear to cause any kind of damage to the drive.

My cables are keyed, they will only go on one way.

Which bay are you installing it into? I'm pretty sure that you need to install the 2nd hdd into the smart bay that is closest to the rear of the computer.
Just a thought!

update

Turns out the cable I received with the 2nd HD bracket was defective, when I installed a new cable that Sager sent me I had the HD working in five minutes.....

Ah. Probelm solved! Case closed.

Never hurts to invoke the LEMON THEORY (no matter how good things are made, make enough of them and there's bound to be at least one lemon that slips by QC).

True, I did run into one slight problem with the new drive. I booted it up & I got a "no OS found"error because it tried to boot from the new drive.

I went into the BIOS & made sure it was set to boot from my 60 gig 7200 RPM drive(It was), so I had to set the new 40 gig drive to disabled under the boot options, then it booted up just fine.

I have Partition Magic 8 installed, so I figured I would use that to format the new drive but PM froze up when I tried to open it up with the new drive. I rebooted & formatted the drive with the disc management in WindowsXP. Now, PM works fine again..

Sheesh... when it rains it pours, eh? Well, I'm glad you got it all settled.
