I had just finished updating windows and was updating the video driver for my 8500 from dell when I was the bios update. I did the bios and then restarted my and it wont boot.. the power goes on and then it's a black screen, The hard drive spins but it doesn't sound like it should. Where is this BIOS chip located on my motherboard or the Video card, (nvidia gforce 64meg). I called dell and they said sounds like i need a new motherboard, dell charges 600 bucks for a motherboard, ebay 280 for a referbished. I am wondering if there is anyway to just replace the bios chip, or if replacing the video card will work.

Sounds like your 8500 is dead. Your gonna need a new mobo. You might be able to replace the Bios chip but you'd need to really handy with a soldering iron and actually find a replacement chip.

I thought the 8500 and 8600 shared the same chassis. If so, isn't the video card modular and could be replaced?

Yep, there is no need for a motherboard replacement if it is the video BIOS that failed a flash, all you need is a new video card. You have many options here, I suggest ebay first and then perhaps trying Dell to get the video. I would suggest that it is worth getting one of the 128MB cards, if you have to replace it then you may as well upgrade whilst you're at it. These cards will cost, at most if you go for a brand new one, US$228 plus shipping so it's a lot cheaper than a new motherboard. As follows:

-> 128MB nVIDIA GeForce FX 5650 Go, Part N1539
-> 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo, Part H3251

Instructions for replacement are the same as the i8600, which can be found in the Notebook FAQ.

Hm, I wish there was really some way to tell that replacing the video card will work. I see on ebay there is a gforce 64meg for 80 bucks. If the video card is dead like mine are these crooect symotoms that I am having, not booting up properly like my harddrive/processor doesn't sound right.. I that because of the video card.
