Question Regarding XPS2 Memory

Hey all, im a long time viewer and now im a member.

::SKIP THIS IF YOU JUST WANT TO READ MY QUESTION::

I had a question regarding my XPS2 (which happened to go into boxing this morning, ordered 3/16)

Being the genius that I am, when i ordered my laptop i looked at the 512 mb option and saw that it it said "512 mb 2 dimm" and i thought that it was 2 pieces of 512 mb ram making it a gig, instead of the 2x pieces of 256 mb which is gonna make it 512mb total

I tried calling Dell early to see if i change my RAM and add a bookbag but it would have delayed my order by 5 days, so i said screw that and i Decided to get my own RAM and bookbag.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Now i know no one likes lists but here we go:

1) Is it possible to use mismatched memory for the notebook, (ie 1 gig stick & 256mb)
a) if its possible, do different brands matter?
b) any recommendations on brands, websites where i could look for ram?
c) this is my first time ordering a dell, do they make it difficult to install your own ram?
d) if i can mismatch RAM would it be worth it to have 1024mb total or pay the extra for 1280mb total?

2) Any bookbag recommendations since the Dell one is not an option?

I bought a Victorinox Webmaster Plus Bag (yes Victorinox the Swiss Army Knife people) and it holds my current 16 inch notebook with room to spare.

IF its a good idea and works, I am thinking of ordering my XPS2 with 512k then upgrading with memory from Memory 4 Less or someplace else.

Dell Site => going from 512 to 2GB ---> $750
2 GB on Memory4less ---> $400

That savings will let me get the upgraded processor or other stuff I dont really need

Id be interested to see if this works, because that is one heck of a savings.
