College Kids with a 17" Laptop - Page 2

I currently have the 6000d, but the graphics aren't great with the x300. I am planning on returning it and probably going to get the 9300. The 17" may be a bit big for college classrooms, but you can enjoy it anywhere else on campus. I'm liking the 15.4" on the 6000 but the next best thing for gaming is the 17" 9300, and hopefully no sparkles on the lcd. I know the XPS Gen2 is the best gaming notebook, but I don't have that much money, and don't want to carry the extra weight and spazazz from the multi color lights.

I wouldn't say that theft is common, but it can easily take place. People are in and out of your room all the time, and when you are not there and your roommate has friends over, things may go missing, unless your roommate is a very close friend. I overheard that there was a party at this house, and the girl living there got here powerbook jacked, so that must really suck. I think the person did have a lock, but they just ripped it out. So, I would definitely watch your belongings.

Here's an idea to Make the XPS2 less showy and less subject to theft on campus: Spray paint it multi-colored like many students do with their mediocre mountain bikes... Lol, just kidding. You could do it though and make it a "grunge" gamer - would work well with the LEDS... Just a thought, I'm bored waiting for my 9300 to finally get here, after the second cancelation/reorder ... I'm so using my 9300 on campus. Thieves beware, I own a crowbar!!! BTW - most laptop thefts I've heard about at my school have been from unlocked doors and thefts from cars. Hide that sucker when it's in your Honda!

Being a grad student, I "live" in a secured lab so generally it's only other grad students around ... even so, everyone locks their laptops to the desk and all the computers are still chained down ... I guess being somewhat quieter, if someone hears the *bang* of a laptop being pulled from its lock, they'll turn around and have a look ...

That said, how secure is the locking slot on a 9200/9300/XPS-2? I've seen some that are real flimsy (eg. if you lifed the laptop from its locking cable the Kensington slot would pull out) ...

Actually that's another point ... Dell Theft Cover only covers forceable theft (eg. breaking into your house or your car to get to the laptop). Anyone know if it covers laptops cut or pulled from their locking cables?
