8890 ctrl and fn key swap firmware!!

Do not install the below firmware on any system other than the 8890 or it WILL ruin it! This is an at your own risk procedure. If you're not up to it, don't attempt it.

For those of you wanting your ctrl key on the outside of your fn key, it's now possible =).

First you need to download the .exe file we tried to make as easy as possible
DOWNLOAD 8890 only.

Download it to your desktop:

File renamed to 8890kb.exe

Make sure your AC power is plugged in!
Then put in a blank floppy into your floppy drive (make sure it's not write protected). Double click the file

Click "Create"

Click "YES" and it will format and write everything you need to your floppy disk.

When it's done reboot your 8890 with the floppy disk still in. If you have changed your boot sequence from the factory default, go into your bios (F2) and set it back to boot from the floppy.

Once it's done flashing the firmware, you will need to remove the floppy disk and hold the power button down to reboot.

Now the fn key will work as the ctrl key and the ctrl key will work as the fn key so all that is left to do is swap the keycovers to reflect this:

carefully pull up on the top of the key with your fingernail or something like that to release the top half of the key. Then you can lift it off.

To put it back on, slide the bottom down into place first then snap the top into place.

please please please please please tell me will it work on the 5680? if so, you are my hero.

edit: i would also like to add that it is great that you would actually listen to criticisms on the board. i'm glad i ordered from you.

edit edit: oh, and would it work on the 8887? i know some people who own them and they aren't exactly fond of the placement either.

You guys are just plain fantastic

Im with Peat there.. if you guys really managed to make it work for the 5680 too.......... i would love u till.... a long time..

But really, i have NEVER seen such good customer support. There service you and sager put out is simply amazing. I dont even have my 'top yet, and i have no problems recommending u guys!

That is cool.

Not to look a gifthorse in the mouth, but it would be AWESOME if Sager could:

1) put the Fn where the Windows key is currently located.
2) get a bigger CTRL key that will go in place of the current CTRL and Fn.
3) Throw the windows key in the garbage where it belongs.

I like Windows, but I absolutely hate what Microsoft has done to all of my Keyboards.

[realism]I know, I know... I'm just dreaming. I don't really expect Sager to actually do something like that. I'm just venting about the way Microsoft has ruined my keyboards with keys that serve almost no function.[/realism]

Adam, is the utility that creates the key.bin file available for people to use? For example, for people in the UK who buy a US keyboard but want SHIFT-4 to be the £ symbol?

take me to the alter, adam alter

I must say, that's incredible service. I hope the 5680 patch is ready shortly, and this simply reaffirms my choice to make my first Sager purchase ($3400) through PCTorque.

With service like this, it's my first of many, many purchases from them.

w00t, I hate that reg configuration
HOLY GOD. This is amazing. I cant believe it. I am more impressed that Adam worked to get us this, and that he actually listens. I am amazed. Well done. I will never buy from anyone else for a very long time. Thanks.

If we screw up for some reason (floppy dies or something) will our computer be operational? Also, is there a way to switch it back in case it doesn't work out for you?
WOW....like everyone else said THAT IS TRUE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I do have one complaint though, recently i was thinking of all the good things i would write in my review to www.resellerratings.com once I get my 5680. Well my problem is that the list just keeps getting freaking longer! For once Adam (and everyone at PC Torque for that matter) just screw something up...prove to my mother that "nobody's perfect"

And also like everyone else said, a 5680 version would be out of this world.

Hey, Adam! As long as you're poking around in the BIOS, how about finding the spot to enable MAM and PME in the 865PE on the 5680 and 8890 motherboards (i.e., enable PAT)!

THAT would make a great many of us demand the privilege of having your children, I do believe.

So I take it Clevo read my "Fn - CTRL" swap dream in in that other thread - if so, WAY TO GO CLEVO! (or Sager?)

Please tell me this works for the 8887!?

I realized that the key is passed to the connector on the mobo, then from there, it's commands are handled (i.e. NOT passed to the OS, so no ASCII code for it!!!).

Anyway, I dreamt I merely switched two wires (hey, it WAS a dream) and reversed the CTRL key with it, then went and popped each keycap off and switched. VOILA it worked (in my dream).

So... I'm wondering if a KEYBOARD BIOS upgrade would resolved this? ARE YOU LISTENING CLEVO? Re-map it in the BIOS, and the users can just swap key caps!

Sounds like a winner to me!

Heh, maybe you should register that floppy-create program, Adam!

if you're brave enough to try it out on the 8887, let me know of the results, some of my pallies have them and are bugged by it.
