8890 ctrl and fn key swap firmware!! - Page 2

Adam must be really spoiling to get on the cover of Time magazine as man of the year.

Given you can do this for the Ctrl and Fn keys, is it possible to change the (il)logical position caps lock and Ctrl key?

The key caps can stay in place, I just want to have like the old VT-100 days before IBM and Microshi.. got hold of keyboards and moved everything.

If you can get the Ctrl key back to its rightful place next to the "A" key, Emacs people will not only have Adam's children they might even stop rubbishing other less sentient beings than themselves .

Adam... i was curious... would this patch work on say the Prostar 8814? or only on the Sager 8890?

rest of post is just me venting about "the other reseller".... you can skip it.

as you can see by my sig, i've already ordered the 8814 from another company (it was a case of finding PCTorque AFTER paying for my order)... but they're taking their sweet time shipping it to me.... my original estimate was that i was supposed to recieve it by the 9th... then i found out someone didn't do their job in a timely matter... so it didn't actually go to prostar until a week after it was supposed to... new estimate (with 2nd air) is that i recieve the laptop by friday "for sure"... but if they don't ship it by the end of the this day (being the 10th)... it ain't gonna happen... grrr...

i have a massive urge to cancel it... but that would then delay me from getting a laptop even more.

i want my laptop...

Goobers it should work fine with the Prostar. Sager hooked us up with the .bin file after we and many here talked about wishing they were swapped. We just basically took the .bin file and created the batch, exe files, and boot disk to make it easy for you to flash... and of course did a quick write up to clear out most potential questions.

Nice! This is wonderful. Exactly what I wanted. I just flashed the firmware and swapped the keys. Works great!

I had one complaint about my 8890 and it was the location of the Fn key. Now I have nothing to complain about. Hmmmm. Let's see, what else would I want? Nothing! I'm all set.

Got my 8890 working perfectly and my 5680 hopefully ships by Friday. It's OK, you can be jealous.

yeah, if i may ask, why two?
Holy SH*T You're out of your MIND! YOu got TWO??!?!?! My god, when I said I wish I could have both, I didn't mean it THAT way! They are essentially the same laptop, they are about as heavy, have the same functionality, and just about everything. You should have just gotten an 8890, and some really good centrino. Then you could be really mobile, and also very powerful!

please oh please give us a version that will work with the 4760/80 people out here!

8890 is for me and the 5680 will be my woman's. So really their both mine since she won't use it much. If my roommate orders a Sager (he's thinking about it) then I'll have 3 top-of-line Sagers in my house.

I can't complain. I am debt free and I make good money so I'm taking advantage of it while I still can.

Back on topic (sort of)........ I see Adam posted this same firmware flash for the 5680. Sweet!!!!!!!!!

Not to look a gifthorse in the mouth, but it would be AWESOME if Sager could:

1) put the Fn where the Windows key is currently located.
2) get a bigger CTRL key that will go in place of the current CTRL and Fn.
3) Throw the windows key in the garbage where it belongs.

Actually Ever since learning the windows key shortcuts ive grown to love it and couldnt live without it i dont think.. so nice to get to the desktop, explorer or system properties with a two key combination. now as for the right click key i have no use for that 1...

Another avenue worth looking...

I've been using TradeKeys for some time now, but I don't think it would work for the function key. But it works great with any other.

I have a French-Canadian keyboard and the layout was forcing us to use the Function + ALt + the proper key for accents... I remapped the Windows key as Right-ALt with the utility.

Thanks Adam,

I just got my 8890 and have been hitting the function key consistantly for the ctrl key. Now it's all fixed. Moving the keys was a bit of a pain, but easy once you get the hang of putting in the bottom part.

Will this have to reflashed after a BIOS upgrade?

Problem with Ctrl-FN Swap upgrade

Okay, I just finished the bios swap, and everything *seemed* fine. However, now my Fn key is acting like it is always depressed. Hence, I cannot use my esc key, backspace, or numbers one through five on top. cant turn on numlock, cant use function keys, hence cant get into bios. basically cant use any key that doubles as a fn key.

is there an old .bin file that i can revert back to, or has anyone else experienced this at all? please help !!!!

Adam, if I swap the keyboard on my 8887 for the 8890, can I flash the Fn and Cntrl swap as well?
