Sony Quality?

Thread Starter
There is no doubt, Sony machines are the best looking. Tempted to get one when I replace my current machine. Question is how reliable are they and how is their support?

Have had basically no trouble getting Toshiba to fix things when I can demonstrate their is a problem. What about Sony?

In order, I think quality wise it's IBM, Dell or Toshiba, and then? Any feedback? Value for the money seems to be Dell then Toshiba. Not sure about HP/Compaq.

it depends on who you ask..............subjective

It's all subjective. The service you get depends on the service plan you bought. My boss has the next-day onsite from Sony, and they did in fact show up the next day, onsite, to fix the problem (bad motherboard).

The build quality of Sony's seems to be a little divided. Some think they're great, others think they stink. A big part of it comes down to how capable you are of diagnosing / fixing your own problems.

This is entirely correct and is a major issue for Sony if they wish to make repeat customers. There are major design flaws in several recent Vaio notebooks that Sony has never deigned to acknowledge or offer to correct. For the price of the product, this is inexcuseable. Boiled down to essentials, the only place Sony shines is design of the smaller form factor laptops but this is offset by shoddy construction in some of these and standard design laptops.

Vaio laptops are the best looking of any laptop but past this singular characteristic there is nothing that Sony offers that cannot be found from other vendors at a lower price and with better post-purchase support, pain-free OS upgradability, reasonable access to parts, etc. Sony has to cease believing that they offer laptops that are somehow inherently superior by stamping the Vaio label on them and actually work on offerings that are in fact demonstrably superior.
