Will those slot drives take in any size of an optical disk - even those mini ones?

as i wrote in the first posting, the 3com does not need the antenna deployed to work. i do not deploy it and it works perfectly well. the antenna has two positions when out, you can either leave it flat but extended from the card, or you can tilt the antenna up when extended from the card...but like i said, i never use it extended out.

the panasonic does not handle the mini's, b/c the grabbing mechanism doesn't actuate until you have the normal disc is almost all the way in.

i do not know about the pioneer, but from my experiences with other pioneer devices, they start to actuate alot earlier...but before buying, i would ask the retailer first.

Now I remembered why those slot drives looked familiar - I have one in my car Hmm, they do seem rather nifty and magical. I have to see if it'll play those mini disks - they're usually more expensive (though hold less data ) than the regular CD-Rs but I give them out to people and use them as my business cards.

i would check the pioneer then...my experience is that the pioneer ones do, but i have been known to be consistantly wrong on anything computer related

will these drives fit any dell (including a 6000)?

if the dimensions are the same, it should. normally, the OEM drive is the same as anyother drive if it is the same size. you simply remove the plastic housing off the old drive and put it on the new one. depending on the laptop, there may be an adapter which you will need as well.

on my 700m, i removed the plastic housing (this essentially is the housing that makes it fit in the media bay). I removed the adapter card since the pins of the drive are in a different location than the recepticle in the laptop. i took both and put them on the new drive.

if you are going from say a tray drive to another tray drive, you may have a problem fitting the front bezel (for example, I had a i5000e and i tried fitting a different drive, but the face bezel didn't match up). some drives come with a face bezel included, others do not...but since this is a slot drive you do not need to worry about it. now since it wasn't exactly made for the dell, the front plastic bezel isn't overlappling etc, thus there is a small gap on the left side as seen above.

i do not want to have to look up everybody's drive, so you can just google the model number of your drive and find the dimensions for it. if it is the same as the panasonic or pioneer listed in this thread, then you are good to go. if the drive needs an adapter plug, it will probably be included on your existing drive so you do not need to buy an adapter which the retailers sell as extra.

with that, it looks like from the drives offered for the 6000 that it is the same size drive, so it should work

Like I said above, I do use them as business cards/diginal portfolio - it's one of those self playing presentations. They're neater than the regular sized cd's.

It's an ANYCOM BTM100...however, i do not recommend it or the iogear. the anycom is too tapered, too low profile to feel comfortable, and the charging adapter was a bit wierd. the iogear was perhaps the perfect solution for me, but it was too damn narrow. an inch wider and it would be perfect for my needs (rechargeable via usb, the mini usb fit my razr, on/off, bt)

laffingbilly, i got the pioneer thx to ur post. you asked about the pioneers drive mechanism and to me, it sucks in the disc pretty fast. it takes in in faster than the desktop slot dvd.

Hate to add another post taking this thread ot, but do you have a wired MS optical notebook mouse to compare it to? I'm trying to get a feel for the IO Gear mouse. The MS one is about as small as I'd want to go, and I like the whole charging through the cable idea.

Thanks

^^which mouse do you have?

the iogear is 1.5" wide. if you are prone to squeezing tight on the mouse, you will get hand cramps b/c it is so narrow. an option would be to get some foam pad with adhesive back to wide the grip portion of the mouse so width is 2" or more.

i have the macally btmicro which is actually 1.5" but macally has the padding on the side which makes it 2". of course it has a usb cradle not just the cord like the iogear.

I was looking at that macally one, too. I found a good deal on the IO gear bt mouse, thats the only reason I was considering it (less then $30 shipped).

Do you like the macally one? I purchased the bt addon for my I8600 just for the purpose of getting a bt mouse (and headphones once the price drops to a reasonable amount). However, its been almost 6 months and I still haven't picked a mouse.

I use that corded Microsoft optical notebook mouse (free from MS). Its really small, and I don't think I'd want a mouse smaller than that.

not sure...but if it is wider than 1.5" then i wouldn't get the iogear unless you add the mod that i posted.

i like the macally. too bad it uses a cradle to power via a/c cord, though. but the cradle is small. if i have more time, i may search for a usb cord to power the thing rather than the a/c adapter. it's not an issue since i use a small battery travel charger anyways.
