Ok, here's the answer I received today regarding the 5500 disappearing:

Hi,

Thanks for your interest in Alienware!

Unfortunaly, we indeed do not offer anymore the 5500 laptop. Nevertheless, we will launch a new laptop within a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Please keep an eye on our web site!

For any further information, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Regards,

2 weeks to two months?

Hrmm...Thx MCesio for the info. I figured they would fill the gap between Sentia and 7700, but I wouldn't have thought they would have left the gap there for so long. Seems like some lost revenue in there and maybe some potential customers.

ps-bought my 5500 about 2 months ago---lil dissapointed with my "Upgradeable" graphic card options. But, the lappy has been great.

I couldn't agree with you more. Why leave a gap at all? It makes no sense at all. In my view Dell's notebook range is too much, but right now AW have two extremes, very light or a huge desktop replacement not ideal for carrying.

I hope it's worth it.

Pretty much in the same boat as you Plain. If I knew they were phasing out the 5500 so soon, I would have saved my money and went elsewhere. Still happy with my machine though. Couldn't be better.

ok here is my two cents. i think that a big part of this upgradeable graphics hubbub with the 5500 is because the industry wide switch from agp to pcix (you can thank intel for this). not only that but the last round of cards that came out from nvidia and ati are the final ones that will be available for agp. after i built my desktop about a year ago i thought that i might just upgrade my graphics card, but after the release of the newest generation came out i could hardly find any agp versions, and the ones i did find were from companies i didnt want to buy from (ie ati - 3rd party company, nvidia - small unknown russian 3rd party company). anyways i sat around and lamented the fact that i was going to be unable to buy a new video card for my beast, but the money in my special computer account kept adding up. finally alienware released the 7700, and i was like cause i could pack this to lan parties, school, and work (yes i know i have no life) and so i waited till they added the ddr3 cards and i bought the lappy.... it will be here tomorrow
so basically i dont think its alienwares fault i think its all down to the industry wide switch from agp to pcix (just my two cents)

I just spoke with an AW rep to follow up a 7700 order and the guy told me that they still have the 15.4 size but with a different model name (not on the Area-51 line up anymore). He said that it will be more of a workstation use with a different motherboard from the Area-51 model and with an NVidia Clevo video card. (I was still kinda pushing them to build me an Area-51 5500, but just opted out for a 7700 anyways)

Pardon me for this mistake....it's NVidia Quadro not Clevo...my bad!...where did that come from???

Symptoms of the undying anticipation!!!

4/4 - Phase 1
4/5 - Phase 2

yeah they are talking i think about the workstation version of the 5500, i bet AW is trying to get rid of the last of the stock on the workstation 5500 video cards and the last of the other parts that are excess to their needs.

i am still waiting for something from AW about a replacement for the 5500, come on AW we are all waiting with baited breath for that magic we know is there. we need a new laptop option since other people are going to start going to the competition and although i know i wont desert AW that easily i would really like to see some action, an announcement, a news posting, a solid promise or timeframe for a development, something....anything......

Well I called AW UK yesterday (Thursday April 14th) in Ireland to see if they had an update on the 5500 re: the email they sent me (further up in this thread). They denied all knowledge of sending me the email and said they had no clue when the replacement for the 5500 was coming out but there 'should be a replacement sometime'.

I can't blame the sales staff really but for goodness sake, what are they playing at? I'm not pleased.
