5680 ctrl and fn key swap firmware!!(11-3-03)

Do not install the below firmware on any system other than the 5680 or it WILL ruin it! This is an at your own risk procedure. If you're not up to it, don't attempt it.

For those of you wanting your ctrl key on the outside of your fn key, you can now also do it for the 5680.

First you need to download the .exe file we tried to make as easy as possible
DOWNLOAD 5680 only. The file was updated 11-3-03 to take care of the fan chirp some people commented on.

Download it to your desktop:

File renamed to 5680fn.exe

Make sure your AC power is plugged in!
Then put in a blank floppy into your floppy drive (make sure it's not write protected). Double click the file

Click "Create"

Click "YES" and it will format and write everything you need to your floppy disk.

When it's done reboot your 5680 with the floppy disk still in. If you have changed your boot sequence from the factory default, go into your bios (F2) and set it back to boot from the floppy.

Once it's done flashing the firmware, you will need to remove the floppy disk and hold the power button down to reboot.

Now the fn key will work as the ctrl key and the ctrl key will work as the fn key so all that is left to do is swap the keycovers to reflect this:

Carefully pull up on the bottom of the key with your fingernail or something like that to release the bottom half of the key. Then you can lift it off.

It's the opposite from the 8890. Slide the top on first and snap the bottom into place.

I've said it before and i'll say it again...you are a god adam. But must you use such harsh tools on the beauty? Seriously thanks for listening to the requests of everyone.

I second that KK3d..

Adam, to be honest, i have never seen such good customer support as what i have seen in the past month here. You guys are really amazing, and i hope it can all stay like that for some time.

Agreed completely... and get that dirty hammer away from the 5680! And the wire cutter, or garden shears, or whatever other rusty piece of yard tool crap you have on there

So, um, anyone brave enough to try this on a 5670?
I am SO impressed with this! I've never seen this sort of responsiveness (and humor!) from any other companies.

I've been responsible for hundreds of laptop purchases in the past where I work, but the 5680 is the first one I've purchased for myself. And I'm now more convinced than ever that Sager was the way to go! (And, the horrific tools in the pics made me glad that I bought it through PC Torque. My kinda humor.)

Kudos!

Bunsen out....

this sounds like something i'll definitely want to do. will it void the warrantly? i'm assuming it would, and that cant be good...

STICKY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow...Thats awsome. Makes a tear come to my eyes...sniffle...

Oh, BTW, if we mess something up doing this, will it ruin the warranty?

As I always say with the warranty issues... if YOU cause the problem from a screw up and doing something you shouldn't have, Sager shouldn't have to cover it. If this is done as instructed on the proper system, there should be no problems and it will not affect the warranty.

This is only for the 5680s. Anyone with the older 5xxx is still up a river.

The older 888X models are hard coded and don't look like they can be changed, but we're not sure about the older 56XX and 4XXX models. Sager is checking it out.
