Sending Dell a message about the 9200/9300/XPS2 LCD fiasco - Page 2

I do agree they missed a chance to have "the perfect laptop" with the screen issue. I won't lie I can see sparkles on mine, although it is not enough that I would think about sending it back. I actually would probably not have noticed if it were not for this forum (don't know if I should be thankful for that or not ) I am also pretty picky about screens myself. My new PSP I bought yesterday is going back because of the dead pixels (about 10, and most PSP's have the pixel issues)

That doesn't mean I don't think others have the right to complain.

Bottom line is if Dell would have went with a screen on par with the xbrites this 9300 would be a dream machine. Although it may be $300 more than I paid, I would have still done it.

Well... it worked. A lot of people ordered one, including you
But I agree, this whole screen issue is a major fiasco. Dell should have taken the opertunity to make the best laptop ever, by using the best LCD's available

Oh, yeah, I fell for it: hook, line, and sinker. But if the LCD quality is no better than what they shipped on the 9200, it's going back to Dell. That will cost them money. And it'll cost their stockholders money if they continue with this trend. I don't want to hurt them or their stockholders. I'd just like them to smarten-up enough so they can keep my money and I can keep their product.

I don't really like my lcd on my 9300

I hope I won't really like my lcd on my XPS2

I hope you offer better lcd screens for my children's children children, dell juniors!!!!

With all of the posts concerning the disatisfaction with these screens, plus the number of returns/replacement screens for a much anticipated product, I'm thinking that by now, Dell management realizes the community is not happy, especially since it appears this may be the beginning of a repeat I9200 situation that had to hurt Dell sales of that model. Large companies concerns - money and image and growth. I'm sure Dell senior management is quite aware and concerned with this situation, trying to come up with a solution that will apease current owners and future owners and maintain their market share, while watching their bottom line. Their willingness to furnish replacement screens with little or no questions, being a start, may not be the final solution to this problem. Now that the word of dissatisified customers has sky-rocketed and spread to other forums over the last few days, I'm also pretty sure that Dell, being aware of all of this , will take further pro-active measures to alleviate the negative strain this is putting on projected sales of the much awaited I9300 and XPS2. Also, by now CNET, PC Mag. and others are aware of this. I think we will hear something very soon from DELL.

Well, I think the least we can do is *ensure* that Dell gets the message. If nobody thinks we should demand any specific satisfaction from Dell, then I'll simply try to document the problems in a centralized location with lots of links to the various threads. And then we can start handing out a link to that central repository to every tech editor on the planet.

Well, Dellbert, I couldn't agree more, and without this forum and knowledgable people as yourself educating others about this and other matters, and start the ball rolling, there would not be the leverage and options this "community" has availabile to it. Remember, this is world-wide exposure to the situation. Dell cannot remain silient for much longer, I would think.

I'm going on my 3rd 9300. You think management has noticed there's an issue with a lot of the LCDs? I hope so.
I think that's a great plan Delbert. A media campaign seems to be the most effective. Spread the word!

They sure noticed when people did that for the 9200. And you know how they "handled" it? They asked their techs to issue a lame boiler-plate message saying that sparkle is a normal feature of their high-tech industry-standard parts, and they told their tech depot to stop swapping out LCDs for customers. Instead, they would just send out a note saying your LCD meets Dell's rigorous specifications, and you were screwed.

I hope they don't use that line for the light leakage problem. Both of the 9300's I've had were really bad. The sparkle is not a big deal to me. Is that the reflective granular textured look?

Yeah, it's much more noticeable on the WUXGA than the WXGA+, but if you get the LG WXGA+, you'll notice it a bit.

I told dell I wanted a samsung. They said there was no screen issue. I explained to them about these threads in notebook forums, and gave them the part numbers of the samsung screens which were acceptable to me

After a while they said this:

1. There was an issue with the LG but its sorted now as they have upped their QC
2. If there was a REAL issue then dell would not sell the LG screen, and then they would immediately stop sourcing these screens

I replied that these threads show there is still an issue and that they Dell are actively exchanging LG screens for Samsung screens without charge

I also replied that they Dell may be under obligation to accept a certain amount of LG screens based upon past orders and inventory, before not using LG as a supplier

The upshot of the conversation was that they explained that they could not guarrantee a particular component ie screen, and I explained that I would be expecting a replacement should I get delivery of an LG screen

(all conversations are recorded)
*********************************************************
3 simple things:

1. Besides anything else I want to protect the resale value of my HIGH VALUE purchase

2. What I absolutely HATE is this culture of "there is no problem" just dazzle with the consumer with PR bullshit, take his money and proceed to next transaction

3. Micheal Dell, you put the shirt on your back by cultivating customers from the fat establishment. If your company continues down this path without redress then you WILL be displaced by a more consumer orientated company. Short term gain does not guarantee the end game.

Dellbert, what is the deal with the light leakage? I've seen 3 Dell notebook LCDs recently. All of them have pretty big light leakage. However, most XGA LCDs are fine. Is that very common for high resolution (WUXGA, WSXGA+)? Or just Dell's?

Light leakage is pretty common. That doesn't worry me as much because it's not usually a design defect or problem with a specific supplier. It's basically a manufacturing defect in which the seal between the backlight and LCD isn't as tight as it should be.

A little off topic but, anyone have any dell e-mail addresses where I can e-mail my problems to other than that that one e-mail service/message thing on the site? Thanks

Dellbert - HELP!!!

Dellbert,

I have a 9300 and an XPS on order due for delivery in the 1st and 2nd weeks of April respectively. I can wait another few weeks. Should I cancel and reorder in hopes that Dell will resolve this LCD issue?

I will be willing to accept the Samsung but not the LG. If I order the 9300 with the 256 Radeon do you think that I will get the Samsung or is there no pattern to this maddness!!!

The pattern thus far is that many more people are getting the LG than the Samsung. It looks like the odds of getting a Samsung are about 25% or less currently. However, the odds of getting a Samsung if you request a replacement from Dell appears to be 100%.

So, just take delivery of your machines. If you like what you get, you're done. If you don't like them, you have several options, including asking for a replacement LCD.

Unfortunately, it appears that Dell has already caught on to the LCD swapping maddness, and the techs are starting to give out boiler-plate responses to "sparkle" problems, so it may soon be much harder to get a replacement LCD. Dell is all about controlling costs, so you can be pretty sure it will get harder to get LCD issues resolved the longer you wait.

Thanks Dellbert

Good advice. I'll accept delivery and if I get the LG's I'll request Dell to exchange them. I'll also call them today to see what they are saying.

I have always been a big Dell fan and I will be disappointed it this does not work out. I sat with a friend of mine for a few hours the other night while he was gaming on his Alienware 7100 just to check it out. Big, heavy and hot but great performance and graphics! Ther are alternatives to Dell and to me the screen is #1 on my priority list. I bought a Sony Grand Wega III LCD HD 50 inch set and did not even consider LG fot that purchase so I am not going to let Dell make an LG decision for me now!!!
