hey all.

my 3 month norton subscription with my new laptop is expiring. i always have had norton v 2002 on my desktop, and it was always $20 to renew. but now they are trying to charge be $35 to renew, which seems like alot.

i was wondering what people think about avast, or some of those free ones out there. if i have to pay for one, is norton the one to get?

thanks for any help.

Avast is great... and so is AVG. Two very good free antivirus programs

I'm using AVG free edition. It has detected a few trojans on my computer and deleted them. I like it alot.

Avast is a great anti virus program. It has always worked very well for me.

One of my friend's computer was loaded with spyware, adaware, trojans, and viruses and he asked me to help him clean out all the crap. Avast caught bugs that AVG did not pick up on.

If you don't feel confident about a free antivirus, then Norton is a great subscription based solution. A lot of people have the misconception that free antivirus programs aren't quite up to par, but from my own personal experience, Avast performs just as well, if not better, than Norton.

I find that there are some free antivirus programs that work just as well as any paid program. AVG has an excellent feature set for being free, and it seems to be quite good at catching most of the little nasties. It also has a pretty good interface.

However, be aware that the downside to free antivirus programs is that you do not get priority updates. Ironically, it is often difficult to receive updates for free antivirus programs when the updates are most needed for a new virus outbreak because the update servers are very busy.

A two year subscription with AVG Pro (the "pay-for" version) will cost less than one year with Norton. Although, note that the availability of Norton AV updates are very reliable and usually frequent about 2 - 3 times a week. I can't say the same about AVG.
