The Cool Factor: Sony PSP vs. Alienware Area-51m 7700 - Page 2

Read a little more, AH13. You will see I am not a Sony man all the way:
My Desktop: Aurora ALX SLI
My Laptop: Aurora Area 51-M
My Console: XBOX
My Portable Console: PSP
My Portable Music: 40 gig iPod, 6 gig iPod
My Digital Cameras: Fuji s7000, Minolta X50
My Digital Camcorder: JVC (don't remember model number)
My TV: Samsung DLP
My DVD Player: Samsung 921
My Car Stereo: Alpine 9835
My Blowup Doll: Obese Clarrise V1.23

I generally get the best (that I can afford within reason) of whatever item I want to use. I am not stuck with a paticular brand. I bought the PSP for gaming. I do like the fact I can view my digital camera pics as well.

It won't be available for another 6-7 days, but here's a pretty good deal...

Memory Stick PRO DUO 1 GB

I'm in agreement with DB on this. I don't think that many people will be purchasing a PSP with the mp3 player in mind. My opinion on it is:

1. Portable Gaming device
2. Portable Media player
3. Mp3 player (no emphasis on portable)

It's too bulky to slip into a pocket, unless you put it inside a bag.

How about portable p0rn player?

So is there a wireless web browser on this thing?
not sure...thats what I would suspect to be..I know it plugs into teh PS3 somehow...That would probably enable the web browsing support..I know the ds has no plug in ability with the GC..which kinda rips people off at that point.

Yes Port-a-pron would be a nice side DB. I would hope most gamers would use that ability to the max...just make you don't get lube on the screen...it would be a pain to get off it.

But I thought the PSP had usb connectivity, does that mean one of the flash drives wouldn't work or would only work for transfering files?

I had my first chemo appt. today, and it's three hours of sitting in a chair doing nothing with a IV in your arm. I'm suddenly very interested in portable entertainment.

I'll probably go ahead and order a 7700, but it'll take a while to get one. Would you recommend the PSP? I think I can still buy one locally.

Anyone have a link to a good site or review on the PSP?

I'm very tempted to buy one as well... There's been two beefs with it so far:
1. Sony isn't replacing dead pixels: http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000037037383/
2. Tim over at http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/ reports that one of the buttons is less responsive than it should be.

I'm not sure if any one here can answer #1, but what about #2?

There is no browser on the PSP. I read that Sony may add it later as part of download.

Hammerhead: try psp.ign.com or http://www.gamespot.com/psp/index.html?tag=gs_lnav_psp for in-depth reviews.

I was able to walk in to the local BB and buy one. They had pleny in stock which surprised given how Sony reported they sold a million units in 4 days.

I read that about the square button having to be offset a bit to fit the large screen but it doesn't feel any different to me than the other buttons. If you are concerned about dead pixels, buy it from a retailer that will alow you to exchange it.

Wipeout rocks btw!

USB connectivity does not mean you can plug USB devices into the PSP, it means the PSP can be plugged into your computer and it shows up as a hard drive so you can transfer files to and from the memory stick, so flash drives won't work.

I would recommend buying one, especially since you have to sit for hours.

Sony is now taking full responsibility for "Dead Pixels", don't believe what you hear on that. Maybe #2 is specific to that Tim guy, I can tell you this, my buttons all work just fine!

#2 probably refers to the fact that the "Square" button (the one on the right side closest to the screen) does not perfectly line up with the contact under it. This has been posted about on a number of gaming sites, and believe it or not it appears to be a concious decision on Sony's part, not a design flaw. It turns out that Sony kept the contact for the button too far to the right of the unit so as to keep a wider screen.

As far as the "cool" factor goes, I'm still not persuaded that Sony's system is worth it. I have had a DS since November, and I'm more than satisfied with it
