just got my dell 8600 - Page 2

well im not ready to post a full review yet as i havent been able to get too much time on the laptop. but i will say this much to people who will use their machines just for gaming. get an ati 9600 pro, pref. a sager. when i play battlefield 1942, the most i can get is 1280 by 1024 for a good frame rate when playing online . with everything else turned up at maximum. plus if u read recent reviews at tech. sites, the ati TOTALLY blasts nvidia in every game. lets see if the new nvidia driver helps.
but i bought it because it is very quiet, and the fan hardly comes on unless u r gaming, in which case it is always on. also one can upgrade the video card later. battery life is geat. 4 hrs on light usage. its light, and one of the best looking i have seen. no issues with it yet except the screen font issue. and i pray i never have to deal with dell tech. support. depends on what one uses it for though.

i tried it, everythings still a bit screwy. some of the text overlaps each other in other programs. ie pics and fonts r not blurry anymore but i think i still have to mess around with the internet settings.

Ok Guys... I just got my new 8600 today and anyone wh has said anything bad about these things should feel ashamed of themselves. This thing is a work of art. The keyboard is great ... the mouse works fine (buttons for stick mouse could be positioned better but are useable)... I have the 1.6, 7k60, UXGA, GeForce FX 5650 and the screen on this thing is flawless. Oh and all of you who seem to think the 5650 has poor 2D image quality are greatly mistaken, it may pump out fewer frames per second on the benchies but the images are flawless. I have played WC3 for a while now and it does stretch the image but the quality is amazing.

P.S. I really hope the new Det 50 drivers push a 20% increase...

just got my 8600 today too, identical specs as yours. i love it. doesnt get hot at all. a little warm but nothing serious by any means. i think its very pretty, and after reinstalling xp on it so i had pro and taking all dell crap off text and images are perfect!! none of that 120dpi crap. i love the small text and graphics so sharp and precise! no onE should complain about that though seeing as they give you options on screen res. games run great too. CS plays full res in widescreen mode (of course) beautiful!! battlefield was great in 1024x768 and full settings. the only actual complaint i have is the a button area clicks quite loudly when i hit it, i think its cause the keyboard is raised off of the case a bit, i might beable to fix it, but no big deal really especially for the price i got. perfect size and everything! and the screen is just gorgeous!! if anyone wants some pics of anypart of it or benchies or aything just ask. i also like the speaker placement below the palm rest area. keeps me from blocking it with my wrists.

Just curious, did you order the 8600 with XP home and then install XP pro or di you order your system with pro and just reformat?

Sure, I would love to see some pic.s, especially of that screen in action.

Sorry, but no way in hell (without cheating again).

The problem with the FX is not drivers. It is the hardware, and no magic drivers can fix that. NV didnt really follow the DX9 code layout, and so when forced to run it, it blows (that, and the pipelines cant handle 32fpp (NOT 32 bit color, there IS a difference).

Sad thing is.... i am the unfortunate owner of a 5900U...

Please post some pics of it and it's screen. And how is it's whites and blacks, response time, and viewing angles? Thanks!
