General sound issues, whats the deal?

I've got a 4750 and I must say that I cannot justify the $4000 + I forked out for this baby when I reflect on the sound quality, of lack of. I find that the audio on this notebook is autrocious and that many cheaper laptops i've used in the past produce much clearer and richer sound quality.

Just browsing through, I noticed one guy had an issue with his $200 speakers and enabling 5.1. Now I cannot understand as to how and why this would happen, I mean my old $3000 NEC (bought in 2002) had much better sound, the distortion in my Pioneer is driving me nutters and not even my external speakers (altec lansing) make a difference. If I have base, the speakers distort, if I have non, the sound is not at all rich and powerful.

Please, surely their MUST BE A SOLUTION, is it hardware? Drivers? Speakers? I mean surely, their must be a weakest link, because I think for a $4000 computer, the sound is nowhere near acceptable.

Any tips or tweaks would be greatly appreciated.

mine works fine, but I have the upgraded 4 speakers and built in subwoofer package + some good audio card, I gotta check to see which.

which setup for sound do you have?

I have the built in subby and all that. However I figured out the problem myself, there is an option in the sound man program, I turned off SPDF sound in monitor option (or something like that) and viola, beutiful sound i've been seeking for 6 months!
no worries, no bad hardware, just stupid users!

Thanks anyway mate.
