Poll Results: DVD+R option though color wouldn't match?

  • 53% (26)
Yes, I'd buy a 2.4X DVD+R even if the cover was black and didn't match.
  • 34% (17)
No, the DVD-R is the version I prefer.
  • 12% (6)
I would not want it simply because it wouldn't match.

Would you want the 2.4x DVD+R / 2.4x DVD+RW / 8x DVD read option if we offered it even if the cover didn't match? It would be black in color.

DVD-R
Single-write format. Plays on most DVD players, ROM drives. Cheapest recordable discs at less than $5 a unit.

DVD-RW
Can be written and rewritten up to 1,000 times. Must erase entire disc before re-recording. Compatible with about 70% of
DVD players and drives.

DVD+R
Single-write format. Compatible with 84% of DVD players and drives. "Plus" formats not ratified by the DVD Forum.

DVD+RW
Can be rewritten up to 1,000 times. Doesn't have to be erased to be rewritten. Compatible with 70% of DVD players and drives. Faster write speeds than minus formats.

DVD-RAM
Can be written and rewritten up to 100,000 times. 9.4GB capacity. Not compatible with vast majority of DVD players or DVD-ROM drives.

Well, the option sure sounds nice. The color wouldnt be the back-breaker for me..... that would be price. If the thing is BIG $, then.....

Meh... I'm not too thrilled with the DVD+R format as far as compatibility is concerned. The re-write function is cool that you don't have to erase the whole disc before writing, but that's about it. Now a notebook combo drive for + AND - media and you'd have something! *shrug*

I think'll wait for the bule laser to make inroads before I buy another DVD burner.

I'm guessing you probably know, but just so nobody is confused, there is no 4X DVD burner on the market in an internal mobile build size.

The fastest internal mobile -R is a 2X which Sager currently uses and the fastest internal mobile +R is a 2.4X.

I would want the paint to match (but I suppose the + drive could be painted), but more importantly, I'd rather have the "-" format than the "+" format. I think there's more compatibility among other drives with the "-" format.

What I'd really like to see are the dual format DVD drives. Sony seems to be the only ones who have it, but it sure would be nice to see in the Sagers.

Dell is offering a 4x DVD+R/W burner in their laptops.

I see that on their site. Thought it was external because I haven't been able to find a 4X Mobile model anywhere (stand alone). It does appear to be internal from their website.

I've been using the DVD+R format for several months now and it has worked on every DVD player I've tried. Heck, even stuff that people said DVD+R doesn't work on, mine work on. (Such as the early model PS2s.) And $5 for a blank DVD? You must have just gotten off the boat. I use DVD+R, (noteably more expensive than DVD-R), and the most I have ever paid was $1 a blank DVD. Thats using Fuji and Optimium (sp) DVDs. Staples has the Opt DVD+R and DVD-R onsale for $10 for 10 blanks.

I just wish that they would pick a standard to use and stick to it. Maybe ISO or something should step in and make DVD=R or something heheh. Now that DVD burners are getting cheap, (I've seen them for $125 at local stores), masses will have them very soon indeed. And when that happens you better believe that not having a universal standard will hurt everyone.

Oh, and BTW, don't buy a Cendyne DVD+R. Not because it's a bad burner, it's actually kinda good, but Cendyne just went out of business due to some outstanding debt they had. If you had a mail in rebate you wont get the check. And if you do get the check it will probably bounce. (Dead serious). Best bet is to go where you bought the drive and beg for the rebate from them directly. Beware, Officemax is still selling these drives and advertising them with Cendyne Mail in rebates (If the rebate goes to officemax it's okay, but if it's through Cendyne your hosed). I have to goto Officemax and complain cause I didn't get my rebate from Cendyne...Oh well

I don't understand why anyone would prefer this to the DVD-R that is currently available from Sager & matches just fine??

I have been burning DVD-R disc's for over a year now & they play in almost anything perfectly.

I have been using a Pioneer A-04 ever since it first came out & I recently bought an A-06, but I use nothing but DVD-R disc's because they seem to give the maximum compatibility.

My 8890 has the DVD-R option. I copied the movie "The Bourne Identity"last week in the Sager. I tested the copy in four different set-top DVD players & three different computers & it worked great in all of them.

The only place it failed to play is in my wife's PowerBook laptop!!

Because the +R burns faster, and + seems to be the winning standard at the moment...

Actually, - is the ratified standard.

I'd prefer to stick to the standard (and I say this having 9 DVD-capable systems in my home, including the original standalone Panasonic DMR-E20 DVD-R/RW/RAM recorder, 3 standalone DVD players (one region-free), two notebook DVD-R/RW drives (Apple 1GHz Titanium Powerbooks), and several DVD drives in our PCs.

I wont argue MCL, but the general indication is with + winning.

not like i care though. You can throw it alllll at me. *hugs Optorite D0203 +/- Burner... *

I'm still sold on the mobile Sony DVD±RW...
I would definately want the DVD+R! I use DVD+Rs on my home Sony DRU-510A drive most of the time, so it would save me from having to buy different media.

Just out of curiousity, do both the -R and +R drives write CDs at 24x? Faster?

The battle for the DVD standard is complex and silly. If you want a good description, try www.dvdrhelp.com. You can also try www.dvdforum.com (The DVD-R people), or www.dvdrw.com (DVD+R people). If you look at the companies that back up each standard, I think that DVD+R will win out. Why you ask? Because the companies supporting it seem like they are more directly involved with the manufacturing of DVD media, drives, and authoring tools. But thats just my guess. I personally would like to see DVD=R come out. or DVD#R for that matter.
