Are Best Buy Ext. Warrenties worth it for laptops?

I posted this message in Toshiba General, but I think its a general notebook question.

Should I get a $350 three year extended warrenty on a $3000 Toshiba laptop (Qosmio G15) from best buy? Or should I just say no and go for it on my own with the 1 year manufacturer's warrenty?

Why Best Buy and why Qosmio? Here's my deal: I have a Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501 that is now in for repair with Best Buy. This is the 5th repair on the unit in 2.5 years (2 OS repairs, 1 Hard drive replacement, 1 LCD replacement). If this new repair doesn't take, or its another hardware repair that fails, I get a $2000 store voucher from them towards a new laptop (via their deceptive "No Lemon" policy)

About me: I'm a hardcore gamer, and use the computer as my primary entertainment system (TV, DVD watching, Stereo, gaming machine, web surfing, presentations, the whole 9 yards).

I know the warrenty is where Best Buy makes their real profit. But is the $350 worth it? What do you guys think?

yes it is

just think how much it would have cost you to get thos repaires done without the warrenty

Needing to pay for service sucks. A lot. The people I've spoken to with laptops have generally recommended at least a three year warranty.

I work for Best Buy in TVs and I have worked for companies in computer departments before. The 350 bucks you shell out is definitely worth it, as 1. repairs cost alot of money, if its included, more power to you. Best Buy also provides surge protection WITHOUT A DEDUCTIBLE, so its definitely nice if you are relying on homeowners. Having to ship out a laptop without a plan adds up to.

All in all, get the service plan, Its worth it.

i'm privy to best buy's internal workings so i know how this works.... first off, the warranty will only cover hardware non-accidental and starts on the day of purchase, second off, the repair center that the store ships it to doesn't get the repair right all the time meaning you may have to send it back again, you have to send it out 3 times to get authorized for a replacement or for credit good towards buying a new laptop if they don't make that laptop anymore, lastly, you should know it's about 2 or 2 1/2 weeks return time each time you send it out. the good thing here with all of this is you can buy a laptop, buy a 4 year warranty, use the laptop for 3 years until its at the end of the current hardware cycle, then bring it in complaining the screen die after an hour of use (or something similar that is lengthy to test) and insist on the problem being the hardware by saying you already restored the computer and ran anti-virus scans, they will send it out because they will not be so patient as to test it that long, you will get it back, come back the next day say the same problem is persisting. after doing this 3 times over the course of 2 months you can get the full price you paid as credit towards a new laptop (minus what you paid for the warranty)

Dano1122,

I like your thinking but I think Best Buy is a bit more stingy. The Geek Squad tech told me last week that to get a "no lemon" replacement, there must be at least 3 hardware repairs/replacements. If they don't touch your hardware, they won't honor the service plan.

I've read horror stories of people getting 4-5 software fixes and some battery replacements after having the unit shipped out multiple times (and having the unit gone 2-4 weeks at a time) and Best Buy STILL saying that there are no "hardware" services to authorize a lemon. Go fig.

It doesn't suprise me that you've had problems with Toshiba and BestBuy.

My experiences with both of those companies have all been negative.

care to share your experiences?

First, skip the poor humans forced to be part of the whole "Geek Squad" company. The are forced to say and do as they are told, limiting the truth is part of the service.

If you plan on taking your laptop with you anywhere other than just home, the accidential damage warranty is worth it. Read your closely first but mine really does cover a dropped laptop with cracked screen, damaged case or system board/connections, Hard drive et...

Extended warranty is up to you and it works on the likelyhood of the mfg having to pay for repairs or not. But accidential damage on a laptop, I would highly suggest anyway.

i have a 17" toshiba laptop that i purchased 1.5 years ago and have not had any problems with it so far. i purchased it from circuit city without extended warranty.

i can't speak to a laptop experience, but i did get an old Rio MP3 player from them w/ a 4 yr extended service plan. since then i'm now on my 5th MP3 player <crossing fingers that it doesn't come to #6>, and i've been able to walk in and exchange for a new one when the old one died. needless to say, after my 3rd player died, i was able to go in and select a $199 player to replace it, which means i've also gotten the benefit of the technology curve. AFAIK, they also offer these kinds of replacement plans for laptops, tho i imagine they'd be more stringent about trying to fix a laptop b4 letting you choose another one with an equivalent price tag.

yeah, I remember seeing that site, bestbuysux.org . Pretty scary stuff. Makes me really hesitant to buy stuff there. The concept of their warrenty sounds good, especially the way the salespeople "explain it" while you are about to by the laptop. The problem is that no one tells you to read the fine print at the bottom of the service plan. B/c if you did, you'd know that you have to have A LOT of bad stuff to happen to your laptop before they will consider replacing it. Just some food for thought.

thank you so much protean

smb37, u didnt read my post well, i told you you have to have 3 hardware defects to have it replaced, of course if its defective it will get worked on. i'm also a bestbuy employee by the way in the geek squad department.

Yep, re-read your post, and you're right. Hey, but let me ask you something now that I know you're from Geek Squad.

Who authorizes a lemon for a replacement? I mean, do you guys just look on the computer and see there have been 3 hardware replacements and then just automatically do the deed? Or does the laptop have to be shipped out again to be verified as truly dead at some off site location?

you people are nuts. do you realize that no matter what you ask about there will always be someone with a horrific story and someone with a fantastic story about the same company?
Hell I worked at Best Buy for 1 year and in that year I took back service plan claims and rejected service plan claims more times than I could count. I still buy from them but I think carefully before I purchase the service plan. Trust me when I say that on some items it's worth it and some it isn't.
